Eastern Ontario Interclub great success in Orono Organization was a key to the success of the Eastern Ontario Sec- tion Interclub Championships held at the Orono Arena on Saturday and Sunday of last week. The event was hosted by the local Orono Figure Skating Club which held the key to the successful event. Last year the local club also hosted the Pine Ridge champion- ships and had equal success at that time. Fifty-nine of the ninety-six skating clubs in Eastern Ontario were represented at last week-ends meet and from these clubs 179 com- petitors were in competition. Clubs were represented as far away as Petawawa and Deep River to the north, Kingston and west to Whit- by. Of interest to Orono was Tanya Clemens who competed in the In- termediate Ladies event placing fourth in a field of nine com- petitors. Tanya had placed first at the recent Pine Ridge competitions earning a chance at the EOSIC event in Orono. Jason Collier of the Whitby Club and a partial member of the Orono Club placed first in the Juvenile Men division on Sunday. Lori and Michael Mirsch of the Bowmanville Club placed second in the pairs division and along with Jason Collier will compete in the Ali Ontario Final at Gravenhurst on March 17th and 18th. All first, se- cond and third placing skaters at the EOSIC event compete at Gravenhurst. In speaking with many of the local helpers they said they were amazed how smoothly the event proceeded through the two days. All events ran on time and com- munication between the com- petitors and the audience was ex- cellent. Gail McKenzie, of the Orono Club, was EOSIC chairman for the event and with her crew of local helpers, parents of club members and the members themselves, seniors and intermediate, had everything in order. Congratulations and good luck. If the Durham Regional council gives approval to a recommenda- tion of the regional planning department development in the Ganaraska headwaters areas would be placed on hold. The hold would continue until such time as the Region completes its Official Plan, which is expected to be completed by the end of 1990. Kathy Guselle, chairman of SAGA, spoke at the regional meeting asking support for a freeze until such time as. a study could be undertaken that would set guideline to protect the headwaters of the Ganaraska. Later she said she was pleased with the action of the plan- ning department. Nancy Diamond, an Oshawa councillor on the commit-tee, said Orono D.B.I.A. openspocket book for new Highway sign developers should understand that because the area is environmental- ly sensitive, it's unlikely there will be any building in the area. "Stay out, you're not welcome," said Diamond. Irv Harrell, another Oshawa councillor in supporting the freeze said the region needs money and ex- pertise from the provincial govern- ment to study the area. He said the area had provincial significance. WilI change name on Newcastle building Due to a recommendation of the General Purpose committee of the Town of Newcastle on Monday there will be a name change on a Newcastle building located in Bowmanville. On a motion presented by Councs. Larry Hannah and Pat Deegan it was recommended that the Town of Newcastle Town Hall located in Bowmanville be named "Adminstrative Centre". There has been some objection that on the one side of Temperance Street there is the BQwmanville Post Office while on the west side the Newcastle Town Hall. Through a brief discussion Counc. Hamre said it was going to be misleading and that the word "Municipal" should be added to "Administrative Centre". Ail members of council agreed to "Municipal Administrative Cen- tre" Alan Lee out infront again The Orono Downtown Business Association on Monday night with Sylvia Parker as the chairman took their first major step for 1990 in giv- ing approval for a new sign on Highway 115 south of Orono. The sketch gained the support of all members present and is expected to be in place within the next four to six weeks. The sign will have as a background an outdoor scene with the large railway culvert, which is located in the area of the Woods Walk Park, iý the middle. Orono, which will be promirient across the top of the sign, will be in three dimensional lettering. Across the bottom a ribbon ban- ner will also have three dimensional lettering noting "The Village With A Difference". The cost of the sign is expected to run in the area of $2,000.00.
