8-Orono Weekfy Times, Wednesday, March 14, 1990 Ganaraska Sets 1990 budget figure' The Ganaraska Region Conser- vation Authority has set their 1990 budget at a sum of $1.439 million. One of the major capital projects is the restoration of the Corbett dam in Port Hope with a price figure of almost $400,000. The Authority will require a 11.34 percent increase from the municipalities in levies. Port Hope's increase amount to 26 per- cent while that for the Town of Newcastle rests at il1.6 percent for a total of $125,042.42. The Authority- has pared down the initial increase to munîciaplities through making use of reserve funds. 1The Authority also projeets a $44,008 capital reserve to put towards refurbishing the Ganaraska Forest Centre. There has, yet to bc a firm decision on what work may be carried out at the Centre or if in fact consideration may be directed to a major develop- ment of the centre. Manage Sugar Bush for profit Activity in the sugar bush is one of the first sweet signs of spring. The sap flowing, the evaporators, boiting and the production of syrup, makes this an exciting time of the year to be in the woods. Maple syrup, one of Ontario's most delicious confections, is also one of its oldest agricultural com- modities. At one ime in southern Ontario, practically every family tarmn managed its own maple woodlot, to provide fuelwood and sugar. Today, however, the evolution of larger specialized farms, has led to a significant decline in mnaple syrup production. As a resuit, mnaple Pro(- ducts have attained very good prices in recent years. With a strong demand for maple syrup and improved production techniques. managing your woodlot for maple produIcts cari-be a pro- fitable venture. Exercising sound, sugar bush managemnent will im- prove project potential by increas- ing the yield of sweet sap. Research has shown that the ideal sugar bush contains vigorous, fast growing trees that have wide fully-developed crowns. Such trees tend to produce greater quantities of sweeter sap than less vigorous smaller crowned t rees. The objective of sugar bush management is to produce on a sus- tained yield basis, the largest possi- ble volume of sugar rich sap per hectare. >Proper thinninig, carefuilselection of crop trees, and the provision for regeneration, are a few factors to consider when managing for maple product. Woodlots require, individual treatment, and the Ministry of Natural Resources may provide free advisory services to sugar bush owners. Owners requesting assistance will receive advice on thinning, tapping, tree marking and woodlot protection. In addition, the Ministry wilI provide assistance in locating a suitable timber buyer for material harvested as the result of a woodlot improvement pro- gram., Sugar bush -owners wishing, to take advantage of this service should contact their local Ministry of Natural Resources office.
