Dick had a pilot's licence un- tiI he turned 96, when the govern- ment cracked down and wouldn't let him renew it, although bis health was excellent. But Dick still does bis bit building sports planes along with members of the Brantford chapter of the Ex- perimnental Aircraft Association. I've donc several stories about Dick, but the Association was new to me. The Brantford chapter bas a rambl- ing workshop near the Brantford Flying Club, and the members have turned out some magnificent light planes. Gus Gilbert and is 42-year-old son Darryl, both members, had just completed building a 'Shock Wave 200", an aerobatic-type plane, and Dîck's triend Andy Hamilton bad called and wondered if we'd like to do ani item about it. It was a beauty - ail freshly painted and sitting in the hanger along with some of the other planes the members had buit. What really impressed me, however, was hearing about the E.A.A. itself. There are about haîf a million members in various countries of the world. They're representative of many aspects of sport aviation, in- cluding vintage aircraft, rotary wing, "warbirds", aerobatic and home-buiît aircraft. They alsobuild experimental planes, and many of their ideas go into commercial pro- duction. "We've pioneered a lot of hi-tech things," Gus told me, "and many new developments in light planes. But we're also involved in curring bureaucratie red tape so that anyone can build an airplane. We also control the quality of the air- craft so that young builders don't compromise on safety." Later we watched Darryl Gilbert take off in a speedy "Super Sky Bot" he and is dad had built. It had taken them over two years to put it together.
