This residence (like its architec- tural twin located at the N.E. cor- ner of Main and Sommerville) shows elements of both late Vic- torian and early Edwardian styles. The plan of the house is reminiseent of the highly popular Victorian L-shape, but the overaîl propor- tions seem to foreshadow the "four-square" sytle of the early 1900's. Apart from, the fine brackets under the eaes, the house and its commodious two storey verandah are shorn of ornamenta- tion. This, too, reflects the simpler, no-nonsense attitude of the Edwar- dians. who tended to rebel against what they perceived to be the decorative excesses of the earlier era. The house also retaîns some fine bevelled and stained glass at the front entrance and in the parlour window. The round topped parlour window is a simplified interpreta- tion of the Palladian arc h - a decorative element which was popularized through lumber-dealer's catalogues which were in wide circulation by the late 1800' s. This house is recommended for designation under Part LV of the Ontario Heritage Act for the following architectural reasons: 1. the cut-stone foundation and the brick work, executed in the running bond pattern, remain in good con- dition 2. it retains the original eaves and brackets 3. the distinctive 2-storey verandah remains in good condition 4. it retains most of the original stained and-bevelled glass 5. the interior wood work, pine and hardwood floors remain largely in- tact ýA- successful auction and bake salé The congregation of St. Saviour's supply shortly after the opening of, Anglican Church held a successful the event. bake sale and auction on Staurday Above Frank Stapleton again of last week. helps out with what bas becomne un The bake tables were in short annual aucrion.
