This is a week devoted to the recognition of dedicated volunteers and sharing with On- tarians the good work of St. John in their community. With over 7,000 volunteers throughout the province, St. John Ambulance is proud of its long tradition, dating bacl< to the days of the Crusades. Thus, mnakinig St. John one of the oldest non-profit organizations in the wýorld. Yet St, John is anxious to nmove forwvard in- to the future by expanding their imi- age and services. St. John Ambulance is a world renowned leader in fîrst aid. In 1989 alone, nearly 3,000 St. John certified volunteer instructors train- ed over 190,000 Ontario residents. Several, of the .groups attending are ableto provide counselling and support to in- dividuals and families with health problemns as diverse as Alzhei ,mer's, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, hearing impairments, heart disease, and emotional illness to name just a few. Blood pressure checks will be available as well as hearing screen- ing tests. Displays of aids for the blind and visually impaired and demonstrations of the Lifeline Pro- gram are planned., The keynote speaker at 1:00 p.m. will be Dr. Dawn Witherspoon, Psychology Department Brock University who has been doing Alzheimer research. Spyecial attractions throughout the day will be sessions on self esteemn by Public Health, use of prescrip-, tion and non-prescription drugs, and a video on chiropractic medicine. Door prizes will be awarded hourly and a tasty lunch will be available for $3.00 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Free transportation will be available for seniors by calling the--Comniunity Care office at 623-2261.
