In speaking with the receptionist at the door more than 400 had at- tended the information session dur- ing the first five and a half hours. She said it was the largest atten- dance the Ministry had had since beginning the sessions. With a flood of coloured maps the Ministry outlined environmen- tal aspects of the various suggested routes as well as aspects relating to agriculture, wet lands, residential areas and park lands. Of some great interest was the eastern end of 407 as it affected local property owners and the en- vironment. The Ministry offered four routes across the Town of Newcastle with numerous interconnecting links as is shown on the nearby map. Following comments from various agencies, municipalities and the public the Ministry is to define (Continued page 8) for further possible units Ontario Hydro last week an- ington is expected to start later this O nounced that the Darlington site in year. year the Town of Newcastle is one of If the Darlington site is chosen it per three sites to be considered for an will following the plan undertaken timi environmental assessment study. in Pickering where now there are five One of the three sites could be eight units in operation. gem chosen to locate a 4-unit CANDU The announcement of the en- nuclear station. vironmental assessment studies at prop The other two sites chosen for the three sites is part of a 25 year foss further study are the mothballed plan underway by Ontario Hydro to new Wesleyville site and the North meet the demands for hydro into deve Channel area of Lake Huron. the next century. an Darlington is now actively bring- .It is anticicpated if demands con- Man ing unit 2 into operation and have tinue as in the pasy few years the gen three other units to complete._ first unit for nuclear power would TestingIf a second unit at Darf- be need by the year 2003. an Vil to rc M9 It hý Off to El.:urope again 21 to view landfollwing plansk Two members of' Durham view the process of handling wet timie Regional council along with the and dry garbage at a cost of $5000 to. director of operations are off to for each making the tnp. Planning wants trucking business moved-Best Rd. The Planning department of the Town of Newcastle has recommend that the General Purpose committee deny an application by Stuart and Jean Wood for rezoning of lands of Best Road north of Orono. The Stuarts sought to have 9 acres rezoned from Agriculture Ex- ception and environmental Protec- tion to a zone to permit expansion of a non-conforming industrial operation and the erection of a se- cond residential dwelling. The recommendation also includ- ed that the applicants be provided a time of two years to relocate the trucking business prior to enforce- ment of the by-law. At a public meeting and through letters a number of objections have been raised as to the trucking opera- tion and the expansion of the opera- tion. According to the planning report there was no objection from area residents to the second resident on the lands to be rezoned. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food placed an objection and it was noted that the Regional Official Plan does not allow a second resi- dent on lands with the exception of a bona-fide farmer for persons employed on the farm. The Town of Newcastle Public works department stated that Best Road is not designed to carry exten- sive truck traffic and thus did not support the application. Public Works, however, stated that if approval is given the appli- cant should be required to bear 100 percent of the cost of any works on Best Road which would be necessitated by this development. The planning report did state that the Durham Plan did allow for ex- pansion of non-conforming uses but must meet four prerequisites which it was felt this expansion did not. larke Seniors meet champions. he Clarke Senior Rubby team winners.
