Wiseman skimmed off about $200,000 from the nursing home, its patients, and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Newcastle. One of the 'employees' was Wiseman's. son who was serving a sentence at Milîhaven for other related frauds. Ail of the financial irregularities came to light in March 1986, when Wiseman attempted to transfer $ 100,000 - money sent to South Haven by the Ministry of Health - to a bank in Florida. Wiseman's lawyer sald that no pa- tients or their families lost any money, the, only victim was the bank. The defense lawyer asked for a punishment which would allow Wiseman to stay out of prison due to his heart condition and related problems. The Crown urged a lengthy jail term for Wiseman who broke -a 'sacred form of trust."
