Three hundred kids took part in the event with many being accom- panied by the parents. The event was well organized and well planned with music, clowns, fast food and even a model of ET. But from all appearances the kids were interested in the well marked bike course that wound around the IGA store and with the various check points. It was not only the number of laps but before testing the course each biker went through an inspec- tion of equipment and a testing of their biking skill and knowledge of Curvply to ci on July 28th by Gord Mills On Thursday, May 31st, the work force of 70 people at Curvply, Orono, were assembled and told by management that the plant was closing its doors for good, effective July 28th. The plant was originally started in 1949 by Ted Samuel, and operated out of the Old Sausage Factory at the intersection of Mill day, June 6, 1990 and Main Streets. Following a fire there, the operations were transfer- red to the present.location. Mr. Samuel soId the business to the present owners in 1984. The parent company, Plydesign, also located in Orono, will remain in the biking rules. Many had the opportunity of try- ing their leg power in the small pull which was provided by Steve's Diesel and Evergreen Farm and Lawn Equipment. The event ran from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. There was a line-up early in the morning for registration. With the assistance of school kids the Kinsmen did have a cardboard Village painted but due to wind velocity the security of the Village was not possible alongside the track. It would have been an attrac- tive addition to the event if it could have been set-up. And then there were the clowns and the painting of faces, again with a line-up. On receiving the news on Thursday, several workers found themselves in a semi state of shock, coupled with a feeling of hopelessness. Like all factory clos- ings, the hardest to be hit are the older workers, single mothers, and people who depend upon employ- ment at CurVply, exclusively for survival. The employment market of the 90's will make the finding of another job in the Orono area dif- ficult.
