A different type of basebali owner When we think about owners of haseball teams we immediately thînk of George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees. We think, and know of George, as a man who speaks his mind about his players, the way-they-pFay,and t-he way they should play, "according to George." George is also famous for his hiring and firîng of managers. The "champ" being the late Billy Martin, hired and fired five times. The Detroit Tigers are owned by a rather different fellow. Tom Moniaghan not only owns the Tigers, but also owns the Dominio Pizza empire. Monaghan has hinted that he is bored with Domino Pizza and wants to use his money to spread good works. Little League Basebali Orono under the Orono banner fStation We are well into another haseball season and it looks like another great year. Registration basheen excelent. up significantly from last year. In fact, we have three more tennis this year over last. We have a Junior T-bal. Senior T-Bal(a new division this year, two Mosquito teanis, a Tyke tean, Peewee teani, and our 0O*B.A. Bantam teani. Our boeuse league teains, playing in the T.O.N.B.A. (Town of Newca stle Basebail Association) League, have started their 16 game schedulcs. Junior T-Bail Junior T-Ball is a purely in- troductory level of hasehaîl. The kîds, ranging from 4-6 years, play with a soft, ruhher safety hall. The empbasis is on "fun" and learning some of the very basics. How to sw- ing a bat? How to throw a baIl? How to catch a hall? Which base is first and which base is third? It's alI fun and quite comical to watch. So far this year our Juniors have played the Courtice Indians here in Orono; the Bowmanville Blue Jays (twice) at the Courtice North Public School; and the Courtice Angels at the Courtice North Public Scbool. The next home gamne is Tuesday, June 26tb at 6:00 p.m against the Courtice Indians. AIl home games are at the Orono Park, south bahl field. This years player line up includes: Matthew Gregg, Ronald "D.J." Boardman, Daniel Corvers, Shawn Dejong, Tyler Ferguson, Patrick Gibbons, David Gibbons, John Patrick Pisani, Fabian Rozario, Tyler Gregg, Grayden Hunt, Rebec- ca Reid and Deanna Ross. Senior T-Bail Senior T-Bail is a more advanced brand of bail. There is a slightly greater competitive atmosphere, which these 7 and 8 year olds seem to enjoy. At this level of bail the outs count as well as the runs. At first it appeared we might flot sec too many put outs, but surprisingly the kids are starting to make some nice fielding plays. So far our Senior T-Ballers have played the Bowmanville Pirates, in Orono; the Bowmanville Cardinals, at Bowmanville's Vincent Massey Schooi; the Courtice Cu bs, in Orono; the Courtice Braves, at the Courtice North Public School and will be playing the Bowmanville Cardinals again tonight, June 2th, at Orono Park at 6:00 p.m. The next garne will be against the Bowmanville Giants Tuesday, June 26th at Vincent Massey School. Keep up the good work kids! Here is this years Senior T-Bahl line up; Lee Allun, Jacob Bonnetta, Laura Cartier, Adam Cox, Rohhie Herring, Brandon Hilîs, Brodie Hutton, Kyle Kote, Eryn McGlynn, Mattbew Reid, Kristen Sawyer, Christopher Wilhelm, Scott Wood, and Glencoe Hogle. Mosquito Once the kids reach this 8-9 ycar old level of hall, they arc into some rather competitive play. These kids are really starting to master some of the basic skills of the sport. They u se the same ruhher ball as Senior T-BaIl but now there is a real pit- cher on the mound. Although our pitchers are throwing quite well, there are sorne walks. Four halls does not mean proceeds to first base, however. This only sîgnals the coach to comne to the mound to give the batter three more chances to a hit. There are no walks. The em- phasis is on learning to hit a pitched bail (you hit or you're out). The' number of kids out to play Mos- quito Bail has been very good this year and we have had to field two teams. Our first tcam, "Hunt's Photo", have had a busy start and their record so far is an impressive 2 wins, 1 loss and 1 tic. They have played Nettinga Construction from Courtice, at Orono, winning 19-4;, Burger King from Newcastle, at Orono, winning 14-7; Shofipers Drug Mart frorn Bowmanville, at Wavcrley Road Bowmanville, loos- ing 8-5; and Mothersilîs Printing from -Bowmanvillc, at Waverley Road, coming away with a 3-3 tie., Way to go guys! Hunt's Photo's next game is Thursday, June 21lst in Orono against Optimist's Club from Bowmanville, at 6:30 p.m. and then Monday, June 25th at Newcastle against Burger King. The Hunt's Photo tcam is made up of: Neai Borutski, Russell Hunt, Pbilip Browning, Brandon Caruana, Michael Gibson, Adam Greer, Dave Lammers, Paul Landers, Matt McGlynn, Tyler Robinson, Greg Shetler, and Neil Williamson. Our second Mosquito team, the "Orono Blues-~, have not had as busy a season, but are boasting a perfect record so far. They present- ly have two wins. Their opponents have been Shoppers Drug Mart from Bowmanville, at Orono, win- ning 10-5; a ramn out against Mothersilîs Printing from Bowman- ville; and Burger King from Newcastle, at Orono winning 6-1. Ncxt garne is a. make up- against Mothersilîs at Orono, Wednesday, Tihe following fire cals were received by thse Town of Newcastle Fire Station No. 3, Orono, during the week of June 11 to June 17, 1990. Thursday, June 14 hetween 4: 10 p.m. and 4:41, pumper 3 responded to a report of a possible bouse fire on Winter Road, Orono. The aiarm was ringing but nothîng found. The Iist narrows for radioactive waste The list narrows as to a possible location to deposit low level nuclear waste. Elliot Lake has been the iatest municipality to withdraw their name from the search for a depository for such waste. Port Hope has some hope that Elliot Lake would corne through and that tise waste in their Town could be located in the northern town. Even with the withdrawal of Elliot Lake there stili is three re- maining centres who have advanced to thse Fourth Stage, that of being a host centre for iow level radioactive waste. Seven of cleven . centres have dropped out of the bid mainly due to public opinion against sucis a move. Port Hope counicîl is one such centre. Town council has agreed that their Commtinity Liaison Group. proceed into the fourth phase of the study. It was con- sidcred that such a study would be useful if, in the end, no other. cen- tre, now totalling tbree, did not decide on being a host communitY. According to Ernie Brown, a member of thse Port Hope Group, the group is ta king, a recess from thse process before vcnturing further. He, like council, points out, "what do you do if no one cisc wants to take it?" June 27th at 6:30 p.m. and then at Orono Thursday, June 28th against Henry Buildail from Courtice. Keep, Up the good work kids! The Orono Blues team includes: Jayanth Angi, Jonas Bonnetta, Shawn Ferguson,- Andrew Reid, Joci Shephard, Dustin Stapleton, Gregory Bester, Jonathan Black, Michael Garlick, Eleni Koukidis, Christopher Taylor, Corcy Tufts and Bobby Witheridge. .Monaghan is the founder of a controversial Catholic lay organiza- tion called "Legatus", with chapters across the United States. The mission of "Legatus" is to br- ing moral values into the work place, and to represent the Pope's religious activism, and his concern for the poor. Monaghan, through his organiza- tion, set up and paid for a training farmn for peasants in Honduras. He has also set up and paid for a system of credit unions for poor farmers and small-husiness owners. The American Pizza King has also given $1 .8 million to replace a cathedral destroyed by an earth- quake in Managua, Nicaragua. When questioned about his, generosity, Monaghan said he Wisx- ready to unload his $650 million pizza business, because he is borcd, and wants to spread good works.
