rjono Public School Play Day Oroito Weekly Times,, Wednesday, Jonc 20, 1990-7 Gord's View, as to a poiiceman's lot The pupils of Orono Public School and Lockhart Public Schooî, combined together on Thursday last week, for a fun "Play Day' together. Approximately 290 children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6, were at Orono Public School for the fun and games. The "Play Day" is designed as a prelude to the end of the school year. School Parent Teacher Associa- tion members, served the children refreshments, on a staggered serv- ing basis. Special of the Newcastle Block Parent Assocation. Despite the threat of severe thunderstorms, the day was concluded on a happy note. Thanks are due to ail the teachers, and volunteers, for mak- ing the day enjoyable. Gilbert and Sullivan, -and their operettas are examples of the perfect wedding of words and music. One of the operettas is the delghtful, "Pirates of Penzance". If you have seen it, you may recal the amusing scene where a number of policemen chase several pirates around the stage to the musical theme, in song and dance, entitled, "A policeman's lot is flot a happy one." Perhaps to most it was a tri- fle dippy, nevertbeless, it presented a satire in which the police were poked fun at, in a fri endly sort of way. In the real world of today, it seems that our police are far remov- ed from being the but of a little fun. They seem almost like "marked men" and to be a policeman these days, in T oronto must be agoniz- ing. How they must al wisb that they could be some place else, ýand can we blame them. Since the shooting of a black teenager by a police officer, the already strained relations between blacks and the police have reached a' state of being just a shade short of mass hysteria. To a large degree, the feelings have been fanned, by over inflamed rhetoric, in statements made by people who should really have known better. It seems rather strange that up until recently you neyer ever noticed any reluctance on the part of anyone to point the finger at those who commit crimes. Once-upon-a-time, the activities of "Satan's Choice" made front page news. They were the subject of police raids- and police shoot outs. They. committed crimes, and most people believed that they got what they deserved. Certainly nothing contrary to that belief ever surfaced in the media, nor were any demonstrations arranged on their behaîf. Once-upon-a-time, anyone with an Italian namne, involved ini crime of any sort, was immediately labelI- ed a member of the Mafia, and straighLý from Sicily at that. If, as a resuît of their crimes, they ended up in jail, most people were happy. There were no demonstrations, no cries of foui play. Now, if a black person steals a car, and attempts to run down a police officer trying to stop him, and gets himself shot, (Continued page 10)) Propose tourist node at Vanstone' s Miii Gerard Gervais speaking on behalf of a proposed rezoning and offiical plan amendment concern- ing the Vanstone Mill property in Bowmanville called the proposai a tourist nod for the Town. The proposaI includes the ex- isting commercial building of the mill, stable barn, the miller's house along with an additional 13,200 square feet to be constructed on Scugog Street. In additional the development would include a 43 unit apartment complex on the west side of the Bowmanville creek op- posite the mill. Gervais also pointed to use of the former area of the milI pond for green space and walkways over the 17 acre rsite which also extends to south of the Highway 2 bridge. The speaker said due to the washout of the dam a number of years ago the flood lines had been redefined to allow for greater green space in the arta. He pointed to the need for stabilization of the exîsting river banks which had been cut through the old bottom of the pond. A number of agency report are awaiting further information from the applicant especially the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Con- servation Authority. The proposaI bas been returned taff for a further report when al ýrmation is available and for the receipt of a comprehensive site plan. Stevenson 's plea for help <Coninued from page 1), it since 1983 and its rigbt in the cen- tre of Newcastle. He said the south half is zoned commercial with the north haîf residential so they contend it is land locked, stated Stevenson,, He said the zoning was applied by the Town. He suggested that perhaps bis lands could be considered as a ma- jor block for development along witb the Newcastle Park leaving enough land near tbe school for playground purposes. Stevenson also suggested the ex- tention easterîy of an existing road that couîd pass two existing residen- tial homes and proceed across the north of his property. This could accommodate, he said, a higb rise apartment complex. Tbe issue was referred to plann- ing for a report. Officiai opening (Continued from page_1) representing the riding Of Durham East. Reverend Douglas W. Hall, Anglican Minister for Newcastle and Orono was also present, to br- ing good wishes. The new office building bas been re-designed in modemn style, with complementary furniture matching the modern decor. Pauline Mote said that she regret- ted the move from Orono, as it was such a friendly place, however, in- creased business dictated the need for extra room, whicb the new of- fice provides. 1eý Following the opening a large ic- ed cake was -cut and served to all present.
