12-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, lune 27, 1990 Anita Bruton Area Talent - Unlimited If you are a "City Slicker" and just happen to think that the sleepy hamiet of Orono lacks talent - think again. Judging by the wares pro- duced by local people and displayed at the Double D Gift and Craft Shop, on Main Street, Orono has local talent able to compete on a par with anyone in the world. Last week, a newspaper assign- ment took me over the road to the Double D to view a school made quiît. While in the store I saw a fabulous collection of handmade gifts, including ceramics, kitchen and bathroom sets, sweaters, dlocks, toys, door stops, jewelry, Sun catchers and pictures. The pictures, and in particular one of two Blue Jays, caused me to track down the artist, right in the Village of Orono. Anita Bruton, who produced "Blue Jays", was a littie reluctant to boast about her talents. She did tell me that she had studied the 'art of "paper-tol" at college in Sudbury for about 3 years. This art, allows her to produce pictures that appear 3 dimensional to the viewer, and in the representa- tion of the Blue Jays, the plumage is exquisitely feathered to such a degree that it appears life-like. .Anita said, that the "Blue Jay" picture took about 40 hours to pro- duce. The prices asked for her pic- tures bear no relation to time spent in their creation. Like ahl who share their talents, Anita said that she finds her work self-satisfying, and to her that is the most important aspect. In pictures, where the human form is depicted, Anita achieves an alive look to those in the picture, through shaping and moulding on the back of the fibres. Another method used, is the glazing effect, to a finished portrait, or stîli life picture. Whatever the final finish selected, they all seemed to comple- ment the particular work of art. Anita said, that given the right location, she would be pleased to teach up to 10 people, the art of "paper-toîl and collage." If you have visitors> this'summer, who would really like something special to take back with them as a remninder of their visit to this area or if you have an anniversary or special gift occasion coming up. Turn to the wonderful talent of Orono and area for that something special, and you will not be disap- pointed. The prices are not "big ci- ty" even though the items are themselves, "big city." by Gord Milîs T-he Blue Jays ,0.tolSret Ah Pa e .O.Bx i0 Osha a,.O tari_____1_J Res:987-636Fax:4345391 (41)576 311 -T o r o nt o. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 3.
