Durham Regional Police said the money was taken sometime last Monday night from the Trulîs Road Free Methodist Church in Courtice. Police said the $10,000 in cash and cheques is collection plate money. The VCR was stolen sometime between Sunday night and Tuesday morning from the Alliance Church at 650 Ritson Road North in Oshawa. Cab service for disabled Granting four taxi plates to a new company to operate a service aimed at the elderly and handicapped is unfair, say other cab owners. Oshawa counicillors on the fare protection committee voted last week to give four new taxi plates to Access Taxi, to begin a new service in the city. Barry Doucette, a spokesman for Access Taxi, said they want to lease the $38,000 vehicles and must also be alowed to pick up regular fares. "The disabled and the elderly will be our primary focus. " Doucette said. $3.2 million to fight drugs The federal government will spend up to $3.2 million to help tenants' groups fight drug abuse and crime in public housing pro- jects, Housing Minister Alan Red- way said last week. Almost 50 per cent of the country's 200,000 public housing units are in Ontario. New store opens The New To You Shop in Bowmanville is open Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Proceeds from the sale of good used clothing go to the Bowman- ville Memorial Hospital. Donations are accepted. The shop is located at 133 Church Street. Oshawa vacancy rate up The rental vacancy rate in the Oshawa area bas improved to a 10 year high but the market is still tight. The vacancy rate for buildings containing three units or more rose to 1.6 per cent in April in the Oshawa census area, which includes the city, Whitby and Newcastle: In Ontario the vacancy rate for private buildings was 1.3 per cent while in Canada the rate was 3.2 per cent. Two stand behind vote Port Hope Reeve Cole Locke and Deputy Reeve Harold Stevens held their positions on the new county building despite a blistering attack from other town councillors last Monday. Mayor Don Clarners demnanded Locke and Stevens explain to the general committee why they voted for a new $10 million county buildin g after counicil voted to withhold support from the con- troversial project. Uranium's future "sober" Port Hope's Carneco plant may have to endure three to, five more years with extended summer shut- downs until the uranium market recovers. Rita Mirwald, Cameco's manager of corporate affairs, said it could be that long before the fortunes of the uranium producing and marketing giant begin to improve.
