12-Or-onoWeekly Times, Weduesday, August 13, 199b Bill Bramah 'S Ontario 1 like to think of myself as a worldcitizeni. Par above ýrabid na- tionalismn. Perhaps. JIarn - in theory. M'I discuss "One World" notions and aIl their ramifications at the drop of a bat. 'Very lofty stuff. But when it cornes to the. crunch, 1 wouldn't want to live anywhere but Canada. A d in- On- tario at that. I'm not a flag waver either. When the big fight was on in 1965 and the first truly Canadian flag was to become the country's symnbol over the violent objections of many, 1 took a detached, somewhat super- cilious view of the proceedings as befits any true bIne world citizen. 1 regarded myself as far above such nonsense. I would looke down my nose, rather archly as 1 recaîl, and say, "Does it really matter in the, long run?" A very superior ap- proach to the issue. This, didn't bother the Burke famnily one bit., While 1 expounded ny philosophy atgreat length, they listened politely but kept on wth their work of making flags of A na- tions at their hatle shop on the main street in the village of Thornton. Gordon and Bett Burke had opened "Flags Unlimited" in 1964, just before the big controversy about the Canadian flag. 1 think al of their eîght children were involved in the flag business at one time or another. It seemed to me the small shop was crammed with wall-to- wall Burke children, ail scurrying around designing, pinning or sew- ing flags., "We'haven't had much caîl for the new Canada flag," said Gor- don. "People still want the British Union Jack, or the Ontario flag which incorporates it." Over the years 1 went back to see the Burkes every once in a while. The last time was during the 25th anniversary of the Canada flag. The picture had changed radically. "Flags Unlimited" had, of course, grown into the big comple x on Highway 400 that's becomne a familiar sight to motorists going up to cottage country. Gordon had died, but some of the children were still there. Paul Burke and his brother Ed told me that the Canada flag had become their best seller! I looked around the plant and watched the large staff making col- orful flags - some of them flags of nations I've neyer even heard of. I concluded that my "one world" theory would be a bit difficult to put into practice. The Burkesgavâýe me a Canada flag as a present. And when 1 got back to our farm, 1 hoisted it up on a flagpole out neçar the garden. It looked impressive. Suddenly 1 visualized the wheatfields of the prairies, the foothilîs of the Rockies, the Maritimfe fishing villages and the rugged bush coun- try of the north. 1 decided I wasn't quite ready to become a full-fledged world citizen. 1 decided to do a little flag waving after ail. 1 went back to "Flags Unljmited" the next day and got an Ontario flag to go with the Canada flag. 1 guess I'd forgotten there are such things as roots to be con- sidered, even though you're a world citizen "The Iatest in fashions for ait limes and ait needs« 983-9341 Froni Around the, Region Advertising manager's dream Dale Murphy, who spent 14 years with the Atlanta Braves basebal team before being traded last week' to the Philadeiphia Phillies, is the answer to an advertising salesman's dreams.
