StMeet Orono Roy CFlTstrElitor The burner has been turned on For Premier David Peterson and his liberals the burner bas been turned to high and the heat is being applied by Bob Rae and the New Democrats. >The poli reported on Tuesday bas Rae and bis crew closing in on the Premier. The campaign bas been no cake walk for Peterson be- ing confronted from manty corners over a number of issues. It bas flot fared well for the Premier wbo bas been on the defen- sive ail too often. Rae bas taken ail the opportunties to cash in on some of tbe knotty problems of the day from tbe environ- ment and garbage disposai to rent control and auto insurance. There are many interesting aspects of tbe recent pol witb tbe public,. in generai, trusting Rae and giving good marks for what be says about the environment and taxation. The ricb get ricber wbile tbe generai 'Joe' pays tbe taxes. Tbe Conservatives on tbe other band seem to be out of the race but tben wbo knows there is stili eight days left. But back to the Peterson-Rae race. Rae is in tbe fortunate position tbat be bas nothing to be critized for as he bas flot been in power at Queen's Park and bas not bad to make binding decisions tbat will always raise the ire of some of tbe population. It sounded quite effec- tive-wben David Peterson prior to bis election as Premier to state that be would dump tbe Dariington Nuclear plant. It was a different thing when be came to power. Rae can accuse tbe Premier of being controlled by tbe developers and the business ector and no doubt tbere is some trutb to tbe cdaim. But tben if Rae bits the big time as leader wbere will be stand witb unionized laboured, a most effective lobbying group if ever there was one. One could ask the ques- tion if Rae would realiy bring in refiliabie container only with tbe drop of a bat. Wouid labour not bave some input over tbe possible loss or sbift of jobs. There is a general dissatisfaction witb the tbree major parties as noted by the many new parties now popping up for this election - an election that bas more candidates in tbe run and more parties bolding the right to run candidates. It must bave sometbing to say about dissatisfaction. From tbis corner we have to support the number one concern of tbe voters - the environment. Ail politicians can certainiy take note and make their commitment to the en- vironment andail its aspects. Tbrough the recent poli it does hold that althougb Peterson is losing ground the majority of tbose polled do want Peterson as Premier and this can'tbappen if tbey elect New Demnocrats or Conservatives. The Regiment, through its association wth the Durham Regi- ment and the Northumberland Regment can trace its history back to 1885 when Col. Arthur Williams of Port Hope was ordered to take up a group of 100 volunteers to assist with the Battle of the Batoche. At its last reunion in 1985, members celebrated the i00th an- niversary of the Battle of the Batoche by unveilîng a bronze pla- que in front of the Town Hall in Port Hope and in front of the Col. Williams monument. The Midland Regiment was given order to mobilize for active service on August i1, 1940 and toid to take the unit up to battalion strength as soon as possible. Following the Midland Regiment orders, each company was established and trained in its own area, based, headquarters at Cobourg, Comany beadquarters in Lindsay and with four Comp- anies in Bowmanville, Port Hope, Cobourg and Campbeliford. Thé battalion finally assembled in the Ottawa area training in the area during the winter of 1940 and 1941.
