ORZONO WEEKLY TIMES, WEI)NESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1990-3 Happy 4Oth Anniversary Mom and Dad Gord's View Oïl 'and "W.ar Sabre-rattling in Baghdad continues to point dangerously in/ the direction of war. If hostilities start, both the World Bank and former Saudi oul minister Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani have forecast that the ail price will shoot over $60 a barrel. The critical raie played by oul has an impact on al aspects of the world econamy, stopping growth, and halting our personal spending, as more of our available money is spent on higlher- prîce energy. This in turn stimulates inflation as these higher prices are passed on to industry and consumers alike. The prospect now is that things will get worse before they get better. Markets everywhere are in a turmoil. With ail these things unfolding every day I was rather disturbed to read that in the U.S.A. young people are speaking out against the prospects of war. They are saying that they don't want to go to war ta save the oul companies profit. As we approach Armistice Day, it -would be well for ail to remember 1939. As Nazi Germany rolled over Poland, Neville Chamberlain came back from Munich ciaiming, 'Peace in our time." In a similar way, young Americans are saying the samne thing. ý I 1939, the world was reluctant ta take a stand against tyranny. I 1990, the world should not make the same mistake. The possible conflict in the Middle East, is not about oil or the companies whose existence depends upon it. The conflict centres once again over tyranny. Young Americans, together with some aider ones, should by now understand that there is a difference. As Remnembrance Day fast approaches, we should ail give thanks once again, ta those that made the supreme sacrifice, ta ensure that we would be free of tyranny. We should also be thankful of the commitinent of aur servîcemnen and womnen in 1990, in fighting tyranny. Saskatchewan and this summer went on an exchange ta (Bill Bunting and Mary Walsh) Love, Fred, Suzanne, Richard, Catherine,, Bob, Brenda and farnilies Local skaters ready for championship meet The Orono Figure Skating Club will be well represented this year at "Sectionals". Six girls will compete at different levels of competition. The Pre-Novice level is the first level of Sectionals. This level pro- vides good experience and noticeability for this level of skater. At the next level, Novice, the top four, winners will proceed an ta Canadian Divisionals held in Quebec this year. But first, ail girls must excel in free skate which is referred ta as Sub-sectîonals before doing both figure and free skate a( the actual sectional competition. Sub-sectionals are required to reduce the number of competitars as figures can take Imany long hours out of a campetitian schedule. In some sections of Ontario, pre- novice and novice can have as many as 50 campetitors in singles. A highlight of thîs year is that Ontaria Winter Cames are in Barrie and the top three medalists from pre-novice and novice will be able ta go. It would be nice ta have Orono represented at Ontario Winter Cames and maybe wîth a lit- te good luck, sameone might go to Canada Winter Cames in Prince Edward Island this season. Good Luck Girls. Most of 50 would have Townships amalgamate 1.Most of fifty people attending a Hope Township meeting discussing county restructuring would have Hope Township join with Hamilton Tawnship rather than joining with Part Hope. Group dissatified with Pratt's pond outcome A member of the Willow Beach Naturalist club has stated that the club is displeased with the outcome of Pratt's Pond in Cobourg. He said it was felt that Ministry bodies would ensure that the pond would be restored when in fact the developer has returned it ta farm land. Dust mishap should flot have happened Mike Breaugh, M.P. for Oshawa, states that cernent should have stayed in the vessel at Oshawa har- bour rather 'ihan unloading im- properly and dusting the area with cernent dust. He s aid proper equipment was not used. Jim Richards of Orono and head of the Oshawa Second March com- mittee was equally perturbed and saîd that such du4t in the marsh could be mast harmnful ta wildlife. Breaugh wants a repart from enivîronmient Canada. Chrysier workers approve contract Workers of Chrysier have ap- p roved a oontract that over the past week was worked out between the company and the union. They are bath to be cangratulated for this honaurary level of achievement. Cia rke Committee seeks injunction 1(Continued from page 1) He briefed council on the past history of the site and warned that if Laidlaw is ever successful in gain- ing approval of their applications that the site could become the reci- pient of garbage not only from the Region but also from the Greater Toronto Area. Scotts letter ta the Ministry calîs for an injunction against Laidlaw ta immediately close the site and that the site be fully rehabilitated ta ensure safety of the environment. He calîs for the Infili Expansion proposai be designated under the Environmental Assessment Act as has been a continuing request from the comni4ttee. Scott also said the committee was displeased with the uine "of com- munication and again requested that ail correspondence 'between Laidlaw and the Ministry be copied ta his committee. Scott said the committee did nat' feel that Laidlaw was acting in "good faith"~ in this matter. The cammittee chairman also spoke of what he called a potential Hagersville in Clarke with the ap- plication for a used tire operation which, he said, would cantain some 250,000 tires with a further 50,000 being received an an annual basis. Mayor Hubbard said that the Town's legal counsel did have the matter weIl in hand. Later in the meeting council ap- proved a recommendation from the planning department in which council objected to the establish- ment for a tire starage waste disposai site. The application is be- ing saught by Newcastle Recycling Limited and according ta Scott operates across from the Laidlaw site. The application is being saught through the Ministry of the En- vironment. NOTICE ANNUAL MEETING Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge Monday, Novem ber 5 1990 2:00 P.M.
