Over the past couple of months while in the woods and along the hedge rows out the Ganaraska way and elsewhere we have been obtaining seeds from ,numerous species of trees. The purpose was to start a backyard tree nursery and grow seed.ings that at some time would produce fruit and seeds desired by wildlife and birds. Well the plot was prepared and the seetus planted. We were careful to cover the.wainuts with screening so the squirrels would be thwarted in any-attempt to dig them up. The wire, however, ran-out at the two rows of hickery nuts and the following day we found but fifty little excavations. Withi less dma 24 hours the marauders had found the nuis buried in the ground, dug them up and made off with their lefind._We certainly hope they enjoy telater this winter but we would like to know what make of a geiger counter they use and that is so readilv available to them. Doesit pay to have timie-on-your-;hands? Saturdays Bill Bunting and Bill Carman generally drop. in for a Mid-rnoring coffee when the topic of conversation drifts fromn one thing to another, nothing really major. Last Saturday Bunting arrived and displays a puffed-up hand and explains he was bit by a dog on his morning walk and that his swinging hand had taken the brunt of the attack. But during the conversation with the Orono treeman the subject of Bill Carman not showing up for the past three weeks brought a report that during some of his spare trne hie had climbed a willow tree- in his backyard to trim a limb or two. Unfortunately he feil out of the tree and spent the next week in Oshawa hospital and now hobbles around with a cane. 1 was telling Toots Barrabali, who, always returns from Peterborough for the annual of the Rebekah bazaar, the- unfortuniate incidence that befeli Bill Carman. Her reply, "Not out the saine tree again." Guess Bill hasnt learned Nis lesson yet. The wife and kids corne too Talking to Jim Richards hast week the Subject turned 10 Nis new venture with the GM nature park and Nis ba.nd of volunteers. Seess that the vohmîteer system is going well when dad asks if mom and the kids can Corne too. Richards States they want to be kept busy when they volunteer and 'we can put the kids 10 work 100 as water-bearers. We still think dûis is a great idea and the conversation around the table would centre on the activities at the GMpark and the ecology. A learning experience that will be carried by the kids into the next generation. Thebirds at the ýfeeder It seemns that those hungry House Finch have finally Ieft for southem climates. They can certainhy devour sun»flowr sed sA. n the tray. The present abundance of American Goldfinch are not s0 voracious nor are the abundant Chickadees, Blue Jays and doves. We have seen our first small flock of house sparrows, the first for us for quite sometîrne. They seem 10 have disappeared from around the house for some reason or another. We-read one article that the Hbuse Finch would drive out the sparrow and it seems 10 have been the case around home. Caught a glirnpse of a Pileated woodpecker in the Ganaraska and the Roughflegged hawks have been hovering over the fields for the last three to four weeks - a sign that some winter birds are moving south from the north.
