4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 5, 1990 --SPORTS m m Orono Ty-kes take win over Newcastle boys Newcastle Tykes were in Orono this past Saturday ta play aur boys. In a rematch between the twa clubs Orono came out on top once more, tiis time by a 3-1 score. .1 In the opening period, Orono's Matthew Reid started the scoring assisted by Christopher Kirkbride and Justin Standeven. That was al the scaring in th& first period as bath teams played well, giving us lots of end ta end action. In the second period Newcastle scored first, but Orono replied late in the period with another. This one from Jeff Thompsan, assisted by Colin Cureatz and Michael Knapp. Orono scored once more in the third periad on a nîce play by Kyle Moore. Assisting on the goal were Christopher Bouley and Curtis Robinson. Congratulations boys on another fine game. We have gatten aur 90/91 season off ta a fine start. Everyone is playing very well. Gaod work by goaltender Lee Allin helped ta, keep Newcastle off the scoreboard. 1Our boys may have some even more challenging opponents this Friday at 6:15 p.m. as they play Baker Park from Oshawa. They will be playing Baker Park again Sunday evening here in Orono at 6:30 pin. Orono PeeWees take titie -at Grafton event On December 1 and 2 the Orono United County Pee Wee hockey teamn captured the "A" Champion- ship at the- 1990 Grafton Invita- tional hockey tournamnent. In total the boys played four gaines of action packed hockey, demonstrating tremendous team spirit, tesire and heart., We only have cight skaters and a goalie but' they work together sa well as a teain. It is their teain play that has made them sa successful. In the first game we faced Graf- ton 2 and defeated themn 6 - 0. The scoring was as follows: Frank Van Overloop 2 goals - Mark Faster 2 goals and 2 assists - Drew Hansen 2 assists - Derrick Arnold 1 goal r Jonathan Burnham 1 goal - Alan Lacey- 1 assist and Jeff Goodmur- phy earned the shut out. The second game was especially tough against a very competitive team from Bowmanville called Mr. Sub. However, 2 quick goals early in the first period by Mr. Wheels Alan Lacey kind of torpedoed the chances for Mr. Sub. Mark Poster and Scott Ransberry assisted. Then, late in the second period Mark Faster fired a bullet drive inito the top corner of the net ta score what prQved ta, be the winner. Alan Lacey and Johnathan Burnham assisted. Early in the third Jonathan Bur- nham scored an'insurance marker assisted by Drew Hansen. Mr. Sub The -week started off with a rush for me. On Monday, I went ta Cambridge ta speak on behaîf of the Solicitor General, at the Kîwanis Club monthly luncheon meeting. I spoke about the new concept of policing in Ontario. This was followed with a lively question period, cavering varied subjects. From that meeting 1 zipped back ta the Legislature in time ta greet a class of students from Durham College, who were scored 2 goals late in the gaine ta spoil Jeff Goodmurphy's chance for a shut out but it was toa little too late. Our first gaine an Sunday was aàainst Grafton 1 but the boys froin Orono gave them the saine treat- ment as the Grafton 2 team by drubbing thein 6 - 2. The Orono scoring went as follows: Jonathan Burnham 1 goal and 3 assists - Drew Hansen 2 goals and 1 assist - Alan Lacey 2 goals - Deraick Arnold 1 goal and 2 assists - Frank Van Overlop 1 assist - Greg Hammond 1 assist - Scott Ransberry and Mark Foster played especially strang gaines on defense. The fourth and final gaine was especially exciting as we played a very strong teamfroin Cobourg. In the first period bath teains had good chances but finally with 3 minutes left Drew Hansen passed ta Derrick Arnold who gave the good guys the lead for keeps. The score reinained 1 - 0 Orono until late in the third when again Drew Hansen assisted Alan Lacey for the in- surance goal. The final score was Orono 2 and Cobourg 0. Jeff Goodmurphy pr6vided stellar goal tending ta backup a tremendous ef- fort on defense by Mark Foster, Scott Ransberry and Frank Van Overloap. Congratulations guys, it was a tremendous teain effort. taking in the tour. The balance of the day was spent debating the speech froin the throne. Several people have called ta enquire as ta when they expect ta see me stand Up ta speak. Speaking for the govemment is determined by the Chief Whip, and I was scheduled ta speak ta the Speech from the Throne on Monday, however, due ta the length of some members speeches, the time allocated ta speaking ran out before my chance came up. My chance will corne at a, later date, and I'm looking forward ta that. On Tuesday, I was sworn in as the Parliamentary Assistant ta the Solicitor General in a short ceremony at the Legisiature. Any swearing-in ceremony brings home ta me the responsibility I have ta everyone, flot only in Durhamn East but ta the people of Ontario. Following debate of the Throne Speech, which ended at 6 p.m. I went ta the new Metropolitan Toronto Police -Headquarters on College Street. There, I spoke about the introduction of the Race Relations Policy on behaîf of the Solicitor General. Police Services Board Chair June Rowlands, Chief of Police William McCormack, Association President Art Lymer and hundreds of members of the Metro Toronto C ommunity pledged to work together ta draft a comprehensive race relations policy for the Board and the Force. The new policy is a testamentta the principle of shared responsibility for the policing of the municipality. On Wednesday, debate on the Throne Speech continued until the evening. 1 enjoy being with people of all political positions, who surive ta represent those who elected thein, with great fervor. Thursday momning, I enjoyed an early breakfast meeting at ROM with representatives of dhe Ontario Forest Industries Association. I learned that the forest industry is the largest dollar earner in Canada. Canada is the world's leading exporter of pulp and paper, accaunting for one-third of the pulp and paper products sold internatianally. Stretching froin coast ta coast, Canada's forests accupy haîf the countrys land mass, or some 450 million hectares. It was goad ta hear the industry's environinental statement. In this they commit themselves ta excellence izi a manner ta protect the environment and the health of the public. On Thursday evening, I represented the Solicitor General at a Citizenship Court at the Provincial Police Academy in Brampton. The ceremony was held in the gym ta accommodate over 400 people who attended. The Ontario Provincial Police Band of Pipes and Drums played, and the anthems were sung by Aashna Patel. The court ceremony was presided over by Judge Kamal Akbarali, who administered the oath collectively ta each new Canadian, who swore the oath while holding their o*.n bible. Most of us tend ta take aur rie as Canadians in aur stride. I found it very moving as I got the opportunity ta shake the hand of everyone as they received their citizenship certificates, ta see 50 many with tears rurning down their checks. In my remarks Iusaid that few lands can boast of the quality and quantity of skills and resources that many different people bring ta a country, and we in Ontario have certainly benefitted from the richncss of a multi-cultural, multi- racial population. Friday and Saturday 1 spent at our constituency office in Bowrnanville, talking with people and groups, working out how I could best assist them in obtaining hclp or working out solutions. On Saturday afternoan I was great efforts of Pat Lycett and Kristin McCrea and others at the Orono Town Hall, in the drive ta reduce garbage. Thie move is taking hold ail througl} Durhamn East, and, I an pleased ta be able ta bring the efforts made in this area, ta the attention of the Minis ter of th&ý Environinent. Untîl next week - please be kind ta one anather - it makes life that much better. Chiristma Food & Toy Drive for Salvation Army Pick-up Date Dec. 18 DROP OFF POINT C.I.B.C.
