14-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 12, 1990 'l T he Mad Hatter's Tea Party by Pat Lycett Surely everyone remembers that favourite chapter from Alice in Wonderland, wherein all characters were seated at a very large table, having their English Tea. There was a reason for the very long table; and as I remember the story, once you had messed up your own place setting, you simply moved to a clean spot. This is only a fairy tale, but the remarkable thing is that we still behave as if we have the unlimited ability to MOVE TO A CLEAN PLACE. THE FAIRY TALE LIVES ON! Some people in our town, when questioned as to their willingness to weigh garbage, practise all the R's, to conserve and to care, seem merrily content to indulge themselves in the fantasy that "someone else will look after this problem," "we pay tax money to have all this stuff dealt with" and "I certainly don't have TIME." Happily, most are concerned, and most KNOW that individual responsibility for dealing with our own waste is the humane and sensible thing to do. And I'd like to give a great round of applause to the patient telephone committee Winter Programs Reg istration for YWCA The YWCA is now accepting registrations for Winter Programs. All children's programming under the ages of seventeen are GST exempt. Please register your children early. The Oshawa YWCA is offering such exciting tours as the London Show Tour in March. Your fare covers flight, transportation to and from the airport, six nights accommodation, continental breakfasts and three theatre tickets. A Fall-Spa at Stowe, Vermont, it features where your fare covers Via Rail to Montreal and on to Stowe, Vermont. Spend a four day members who never scem to mind which crazy hour I phone them. They deserve medals. I still don't know what to do with plastics being stored in our garage, but I'm working on it. Being concerned about the plastic bags that come wrapped around the Toronto Star, Evelyn Rozario called the Star, was put through to the manager, and told that the Star would welcome the ópportunity to recycle said bags. Simply phone your carrier and ask that person to retrieve them for recycling. A great and funny recycling idea comes from Marg Lowery who is wrapping her Christmas presents in, you guessed it, the FUNNIES. Anyone who would like a CLEAN GREEN EARTH EMBLEM to display in their front window showing active participation, please call me, 983-9605. GOOD NEWS!! This past week our garbage reduction program shows the following results: 150 people in the program with an average lb./person/week figure of 3.25 lbs. This shows an increase of concerned people from 62 to 150 and a weight reduction from last week of 4/lb/person to 3.25. BRAVO ORONO. weekend away with a friend. Letter to Editor Re: Browning-Ferris Industries - Medical Waste Incinerator Dear Roy: Welcome, Browning Ferris Industries (BFI). What a delight - yes, welcome to your medical garbage incinerator proposed for the Town of Newcastle! We were about to take a moment to spend sorne time with our friends and families over the festive season, and relax from the recent threat of hosting the proposed Durham Region garbage dump, however, you were ever mindful to ensure that there is never a dull moment in this community! Having suffered at the hands of a serious recession, and the "spin-off benefits" of the free-trade agreement, we have lost Curvply, JASCO, Delta Faucet, to mention a few, yet, we are truly blessed in the Town of Newcastle to still hold some attraction to new industry -- industry that would appear to have a place in this community. Yes, medical garbage fits in so nicely -iow-level nuclear waste at Port Granby, industrial/commercial waste imported to our conrnunity by Laidlaw, the storage of high- level nuclear waste at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station and the waste associated with the tritium removal facility, landscape architecture undertaken by the aggregate industry, not to mention the quarries at St. Mary's, as weli as the landscape adjustments made by our friends, the developers. And now, medical garbage (does this include an ash disposal facility, as well?). What a bright future for the Town of Newcastle! Lots of beautiful land, clean air, and fresh water - the perfect location for Orono Horticulture Christmas Show by LornaAtkins The Christmas scason was in evidence as one entered the hall of Orono United Church, December 6th, and saw many seasonal exhibits on display at the Orono Horticultural Christmas Show. President Donna Hutton welcomed those in attendance and O'Canada was sung while Doreen Lowery played the piano. The secretary and treasurer's reports were presented and all were reminded of the annual meeting and pot luck supper on January 24, 1991. The mittens on the "mitLen tree" and canned goods brought by these kinds of industry. We shall reap in the benefits - jobs, prestige, and lower taxes! Would it be presumptuous to hope that you could spread the word among your colleagues in the waste industry? - there is room for everyone in the Town of Newcastle. Have you got any friends at Hooker Chemical looking for a new home to relocate the Love Canal wastes? Yes, we are open for business! Thank you, BFI, for opening up shop in this otherwise sleepy community! All the best to you, and your families, for the holidays, and, my 1991 be a most PROFITABLE year! Sincerely, (Mrs.) Helen MacDonald members were donated to the Salvation Army. Local naturalist and wildlife photographer Jim Richards was introduced by Shelley Etmanskie.
