Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, Decrember 12, 1990-17 Bill Bramah and ,-h i s Ontario Ordinarily you don't think of tbe potbelîied pigs as ideal pets to have around the bouse. But quite a few people find the little pigs just as lovable as dogs and cats. I had neyer seen one until 1 visited a farm on Cherry Valley Road near Simcoe. The mailbox on the road read: "August Cloet and Girls". August is a beef cattle farmer. The "girls" are bis wife, Sue, and their daugbîers, Kim and Kerry. When you go past the rambling farmbouse out to the barnyard, you find the CLoet family raises a lot more than beef cattle. Aside from four riding borses, tbey bave an unusual miniature stallion called "C.B.', short for "Cinnamon Brit- cbes". In the barn there are a cou- pIe of rare Barbados sbeep named Isaac and Anna. ln anotber part of the barn are African short-baired pigmy goals. But the piece de resistance are the potbellied pigs. there were just three or thenm wheni we were there. Tbey're about a foot bigb and about two teet long. The pigs are registered anitais, and those of a higb quality have a short snout, sparse black coanth v0b sbîe marking, wrinkled jowels and a sag- ging belly. There is evidence that tbey bave been in existence since 4000 B. C. Tbey're friendly litile critters. Two of them in the barn are namied ýorkaruse Dynasty and Pernia Dynasty. They're solety for breeding purposes. But the third, Ebony, is a family pet and lives in the bouse. tn many ways the pigs are easier to raise thant the usual type of house pets. They don't have fleas, are easily housebroken and absolutely odorless. Ebony loves Flintstone vitamins as snacks. Sue has been riding borses in competition for 20 years, but lately her main interest bas heen in rare breeds of animaIs, and sbe's especially, engrossed in raising the pîgs. "They're wonderful pets," she says, "and are becoming increas- ingly popular. [bey're cuddly, and children love them. Our girls are very attached to them. l've sold a fess piglets, but lm flot pushing it. lin more interested in qualits then quantity.", Ebony gets along very well sith the two dogs and tsso cats in the household, but bier best triend is a terret calIed Gidget. The\ often sleep toi2ether. Then, of couirse, thete care t\,xo siall hedgee bus w r ound out thbe lteltager!e. But i's the miniature pigs that are n tbe spot ltebt these dax s.
