2 Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 12.,1990 rSeoos&auMl am HnbOO8 A truism told years ago Some of our readers will remember Ernie Dent, local electrician and hydro manager and possibly the only true socialist that lived in this community at that time. Watching the news the other night and taking note of comments from George Bush, president of the U.S., we were reminded of Ernie and a comment hie had made, away back when. It is flot possible to paraphrase bis exact words but bis point was to the effect that war sparks an economy with thue wheels of industry running fuit tilt. We do remember hie stated you manufacture equipment to blow it up to manufacture more. What bas this to do with George Bush? With a slowing economny possibly a great deal and Bush is also looking for the stance of being tough. Unfortunately hie could be pulling the U.S and most of the world into a conflict on the battle field for ail the wrong reasons as has been done so often before. What really is at issue in the Middle East that thousands and even 100s of thousands of lives should be sacrificed? What exists today and what could exist with the advent of war in human sacrific would be well out of balance. As yet no0 horror stories have been coming from hostages being released from the Middle East. They may come but one would have expected they would have done so by now. One can certainly ask just who is running the show - the U.S. or the U.N. What bappened to Grochev, the Russian leader, finally giving in to support a war ca use in Iraq. As Stephen Lewis simply put it Grochev had no0 choice. "iEs people are starving and the U.S. bas the food." Sanction must be allowed the time to work and as it bas been reported neyer before have such tight sanctions been placed on a country as on Iraq at this point in imie. Can Bush be patient? Was Sinclair Stevens right? One can certainly ask the question of a comment by Sinclair Stevens as to the point that the U.S. would be demanding a higher Canadian dollar value with the Free Trade agreement. There need be no question as it would be ilogical for the U.S. not to do so. We had often wondered why the question neyer surfaced, that of the low Canadian dollar to that of the U.S. dollar. Why would the U.S. give Canadian industry such an advantage - upwards of twenty- five percent. It would just not make sense. A recent article outline the U.S. did in fact get a higher Canadian dollar but not through the Free Trade agreement. It came through agreement of the seven great powers and indeed the Canadian dollar bas been holding firm at the mid 85 cent figure. Itfs water over the dam now but thîs corner suspects that Stevens is right that the dollar, although through other channels, was to be -lifted from the mid 70 cents te the mid 80 cents. A new-oddity The business sector in Orono put it ail together on Wednesday evening when with their spouses they attended a night out for dinner at the Orono Town Hall and a good turnout it was with fifty in attendance. t should happen more oftea for we are ail in this kettle of soup together and if, we can play toge ther we can, work together for a better village.
