Im glad now thiat it's behind me.: On Friday, 1 spent most of the day meeting with constituents before going to Queen's Park for a special meeting with Premier Bob, along with the other Parliimentary Assistants. The requirements of being at the Legisiature and my other duties, comhined with the travel involved, has made the acquirement of an apartment in Toronto a necessity. Saturday was spent getting settled in there. Al the time the house is sitting 1 wil be staying down Monday through Thursday. I hasten to let you know that ail of your probiems will be handied through my staff at the constituency office in Bowmanville. Next Saturday, December lSth, from 1 p.m. through until 4 p.m. we wiil be having a Christmas Open bouse at the office at 68 King St. (Veltri-complex). Please corne in and enjoy some refreshments, and meet the staff that are working for you ail, both i Bowmianville and at Queens Park. Till next week - keep on being kind to one another. The germs that 1 had been dodging for a couple of weeks fmnally caught Up with me on Monday. Normally, I would have gone to bed, but last week in the Legisiature, -the importance of two votes that took place, demanded that the government MPPs attend. Thankfully, today (Sunday) as I put my thoughts down on paper, I seem to be on the road to a recovery. Following a full day in the Legisiature on Monday, I was able to join the Speaker, the Honorable David Wamner, and other MPPys for the %~ights across Canada" ceremony. At this time ail Canadian Legislatures corne alive with lights at the beginning of the holiday season. The program took place on the grand staircase i the main lobby of the Legisiature. For the flrst time this year, Canadian Forces Bases in Canada and military units overseas, including those on duty ln the Persian Gulf, were involved in the event. On Tuesday momning 1 attended a breakfast at Queen's Park hosted by Ontario's physîotherapists, aptly named "Partners in Wellness.'" 1 learned quite aiot about the things we should ail be doing to keep healthy. By the way, bacon was not on the menu!! During that afternoon in the Legisiature I attended my first meeting as a memiber of the Standing Conixittee on the administration of, Justice. This committee, will meet during January, February and March, to consider legisiation and other subject-matters as are referred to it from time to time by the House. On Wednesday, we continued with the debate on~ Bill 1. 'Mis bill Às introduced to irtsure that Ontario consumers wîll not have to pay provinciai sales tax on top of the federal GST. Specifically, it reverses the decision of the previous government to "piggy- back' Ontario Retail Sales Tax on the GST. The savings to consuniers is estimated at 500 million dollars each year. 1 feel that this will help out a great deai in our battie against inflation. On Thursday morning, I was very pleased to meet with Judy Wilcox and students from Bowrnanville Senior Public School who are studying political history. Prior to the commencement of business for the day, ail MPP's wore a red rose in their coat lapel, and a white ribbon on their arna, to remember the violent deaths of the female students in Montreal one year ago. TIhe Premier spoke to the occasion in moving tones. We al observed a moments of silence to remember them. Later that afternoon, 1 was very pleased to hear the Minister of Education, the Honorable Marion Boyd, inform the house of the governments policy on education about religion la public schools. Public schools are places where students of diverse backgrounds can grow together. It is the intent of the government that programs of education about religion enable, students of al faiths to learn more about one another and to enjoy the richness of our collective and individual heritage. Duriag the afternoon Idebate on Bill i, 1 had the opportunity to speak in favor of the bill. During my speech I was able to speak of the many favorable qualities of life, and the people, found in Durham East. I1 also had the opportunity to pay tribute to the former member,, Sami Cureatz.
