Ahn'derson Smith company in Newcastle from where he retired li 1980. Hie spent three ycars with the armcd foorces during this period- Married to Ruth Logan in 1941 the couple have two daughters, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. -Nornu joined the Orono Lodge i Spetmübcr of 1940 and was raised in 1941. Council was to deal with a recommendation from the General Purpose committee meeting which called for the continuation of the sale of pound animais for research purposes. As happcned on January 7th speakers, rcprescnting both sides of the issue, made presentations to council endeavouring to affect a change i the recommendation or to have council hold firma in its decision to, seil animais to registered agencies for medical research purposes. A recorded vote had al members of council supporting the present practice with the exception of Counc. Stapleton. In presenting his view Counce. Stapleton said he was well aware there were points for both sides of the issue but pointed out it did place pets in a position of possîbly being used for research. I think we should refrain from selling pound animais for research", he said and stated that efforts to have animais adopted and fostered (Continued page 5) Local NDP choose convention delegates The Durham East New Democratic Party Provincial Riding Association kicked off the ncw year by electing its delegates for the Ontario Party's Biennial Convention. The lSth Bienniai Convention of the Ontario NDP will be held from March 2 to 4 at the Harbour Castle Westin in Toronto. This will bc the first NDP convention to be held during the terni of the first NDP govemment in Ontario. Delegates for Durham East include: Marg Wilbur, of Scugog; Lucy Rybka-Becker, of Newcastle; Jim Reid, of Oshawa; and Harold Becker, of Newcastle. Alternates are: Natalie Halay, of Oshawa; and Alex Andrews, of Scugog. The delegates were chosen at the Durham East NDP Provincial Riding Association meeting held rcccntly at the Columbus Hall. Energy Control Board meeting which was heldin the Town of Newcastle in the administrative building in Bowmanvillc. At the time of the meeting Uic Town cailed for a number of conditions to be met by Uic Siting Task Force if Uic Town was to procccd to Phase Four. Among Uic conditions was Uic removal of Uic wastc out of thc Town. In spcaking with Mayor Hubbard she said Uic conditions outlined in Uic letter still calls for appointments to the Community Liaison Group to be made from a list to be compilcd by the Town. The Town aiso sccks greater control over the CLG and that financing be undertaken by the federal govcrnment working through the Town of Newcastle. The Town is aiso seeking to have their input into consultants being hired to undertake work for the Liaison Group. Mayor Hubbard said Uic Town hbas as yet to hear back from Uice Siting Task Force but does cxpect word somnetime in Uic near future. The Siting Task Force has been awaiting a decision from Uic federai cabinet as to funding for Phase Four estimatcd to be in the ncighbourhood of $22 million. It is undcrstood that thrcc municipalities arc stil considering being a host community for low- level waste and are preparing to procced into Phase Four of the proccss. The Region of Durham has supported a commnittce report which cails for a more detailed health data collection and investigation into certain birth defects, infant deaths and certain diseases by those living in and around the Darlington Nulcear plant. The comimittee was setup by the Region after both the Region and the Town of Newcastle considered that a form of study should be undertaken. When the province was approached to carry-out a study they cailed for a pre-baseline study be undertaken, before thcy would give consideration. Regional council last week approved ten recommendations which had been put together by tic Regional committee. The recommendations are dcsigned to improve -health reporting and data collection and to make citizens in the arca more aware of possible problems.
