4-Orono Weekly Tirnes, Wednesday, January 16, 1991 The Underground in these days of weary commuting, and the endless traffie snarls, thoughts turn to the underground train.-Would n't it be great to get one at Bowmanville and end up less than an boum later in downtown- Toronto. It was London England solicitor, Charles Pearson, who first came up with the idea for-the world's first sub- surface railway. Tired of battlmng with the in creasing street congestion (Sound familiar) of the mid-l9th century.as he travelled to and from his city office, he came Up witli the solution of an underground network of steain engines. The resut was a four-mnile stretch of line, run by the Metropolitan Railway Company, bringimg passenigers in from the existing Paddington rail terminus in west London to the finanicial centre of Farringdon Street. It was opened in 1863. Just five years later a rival company, the Metropolitan District Railway Company, opened its own line linking Gloucester Road, South Kensington, with Westminster - the capital's seat of government. Various extensions were made as the lie poved popular, but all by the "Icut and cover" method involving digging of a deep trench for the track and subsequently covering it over. J Railway Today, the Underground in London England, bas a total of 494 trains running on 660 miles of track, with over 4,000 cars calling at 272 stations. The average week-day total of users is put at almost 2 million. When is the GO train coming to Bowmanville ? SOON !!! 1 Fi fty year Pins (Continued ftrn page 1) taken by bis father, Sain, i 1929. Thereis no way to tell if it is the samne bird that has been seen year after year but there is some probability it just i iay be. We receivéd -a phone cali after the article last week from Clifford Francis at the Orono Tree Nursery regarding a Great Blue Heron around the creek valley at the Senior Citizens Lodge. The bird was dehydrated and i poor shape states Clifford. It was rescued by the crew at the nursery and was taken to a private wild bird clinic i Ajax which does look after such icidents. Cliffrod tells us that this is 110w a common occurance and the cliic does receive numbers of Blue Herons who make the bid to survive i our witer climate. We are told the bird will survive and will be released again to the wilds to fend for itself. Perhaps next year it wilIl take off for the south. Perceptory and the Order of the- Shrie.
