Y12 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday., August 14, 1991 Green Readîng 1by Helen MacDonald Eating "green meant you had to clear the broccoli and brussel sprouts from your plate before you weýre allowed to have dessert; but, there is now a more significant meanîng 10 eating "green". There are man y specialîy books for cooking in the '90's. Some have been written with a view of heaithier eating that has less impact on the environment; the premise being to eat food is good for, your body, and that is good for the planet. Followinig ini the féooiseps of the well-known "Diet for a Smail Planet", Ellen Buchman Ewald lias written "Recipes for a Small Planet". This cookbook contaîns hundreds of delicious body - and planet conscious recipes for better health, betier ecology, and better eating. The pbilosophy behind tbis cookbook is "living and eaiing with the earth in-mind." In bis book, "Diet for a:New American", John Robbins takes a look ai our dependence on animaIs for food, and what lie daims to be the inhumaiie and unhealthy conditions under which they are currently raised. Robbins writes tliis book in an effort to reveal the physical, emotionai and economic price we unknowingly pay for the way we eat - "how your food choices affect your -healtb, happiness and -the future of life on earth". Books designed for specialty cooking include "The book of Tofu" by William Sliurîleff and Akiko Aoyagi. Taking a versatile food, the authors have provided 250 recipes which are ideai for weight control, low in saturated fats and cholesterol free, and that use ingredients t hat are avail'able in almost any supermarket or heaith food store. Discovered in China more than 2,Q00 years ago, tofu cones from the soyabean family. Ih is natural and inex(pensive, and a quick and easy-to-prepare food (ofien touted to be a food for the future). "The Brown Rice Cookbook" by Craig and Ann Samns introduces you ta basic knowledge about the variety of rice, and yes, there are about ten variations; how to cook brown rice; and what ingredients to cook iî with. Tliis inexpensive book dlaims that "brown rice is the real thing . . . an unrefined, unaduiterated, natural produci ricli in vitamins with a fuîl nutty flavour that polished white rice can nieyer matcli." Produced by the Canadian Natural Hygiene Society Seniors for Healtli (a New Horizon Project) "Vegetarian Persuasion" gives us§ readers simple, quick recipes thai provide maximal preservation of the nutrient content of foods. The idea is to eat a diet that does not hurt you, while at the saine urne providing al the nuiritional requiremnents for good healtli. And, the introduction gives some very common-sense, simple guidelines. 1You have special beaith needs? "Vegetarian Cooking for Diabetics" by Patricia Mozzer, at less than $10.00, provides over 100 vegetarian dishes for diabetics who want to add a new dimension to their diet. And, there is no guesswork about calories and excbange substitutions! For those young chefs in your housebold there is: "Kîds Can Cook", written by Doroîhy R. Bates. Given the opportunity, al chldren like to cook. This book of vegetarian recipes bas been kitchen- tested by kids for kids. Finally, there is a book which, although publislied in the United States, is ideal for parents concerned about wliat their children are eating. "For Our Kids' Sake", by Anne Witte Garland, gives practical solutions 10 the problemn of pe sticides in our chldren's foods. Garland tells you how pesticides in food may be îireatening your chîld's liealth, and the lack of protection for our children against dangerous pesticide exposure. Do we need to tigliten regulations of pesticides in food, and reduce the reliance on pesticides in growing our food? What can you do - as a parent, Consumer, and citizen? Divided mbt sections, the book takes a close- look at "The Prob lem", "Solutions", and remedial 'T-ools". Next week we will look at some of the interesting books Canadian authors have published that look at ..enviromnent" and environmental issues. Prepare for Waste Reduction Week Volunteer Waste Reduction Week co-ordinators in Newcastle are preparing for the annual Waste reduction Week programi which will be brought mbt action the week of September 29 10 October 6. Last week, the public hearings into Bill 115 (Sunday Shopping) continued at Thunder Bay, Sudbury and North Bay. The issues as presented by inîerested parties, continue 10 polarize a wide range of groups and their thouglits on the matter. We heard presentations from religious organizations, labour unions, retailers, the Chamber of Commerce, people from the tourist industry, and executives representing the larger retailers in Ontario. As 1 sat and listened to the presentations it became clear to me, how difficult it will be 10 make everyone happy. The whole purpose of the hearings is to listen to everyone, and througb that input, make the law that much better. This open public process to discuss draft regulations to Bill 115 is unique. Normally, regulations to any Bill introduced by the govemrment are not subject to public input. These hearings emphasize Our statement of conducting an open governiment, and a willhngness to listen 10 the people. The one component Of Bill 115 that is not open for discussion is committed to this and will not change their stand under any circumstances. While in Sudbury on Wednesday, I received the vcry sad news of Marg Wilbur's tragic deaili. She was cutting grass at the family home near Port Perry, when the tractor she was using rolled over.
