8-Orono Weekly -rime--, Wednesday, August 14 1991 Letter to the Editor: Kendal Oas Station Goes to O.M.B. Hearing Close'to 100 local citizens registered their objections two years ago, to a Service Station and Oas Bar proposed by Veltri and Sons Ltd. for the south-east corner of Newtonville Road and Regional Road 9. 'Me rezoning application to permit these buildings was protested through petitions, persona] presentations to Council, by letter, and by SAGA (Save the Ganaraska Again). Nevertheless - in support of Veltri, the Zoning By-Law which changes Agricultural land to Commercial (Service Station, etc.) was passed by Council. A number of' individuals and groups subsequently appealed that decision to the Ontario Municipal Board. Readers m-ay be initerested to know some of the comments that were made to Council or in various appeals to the O.M.B. Before the by-law was passed, a two page presentation was delivered by SAGA, from which the following paragraph has been taken. "As a very strong objection to this application, we miembers of SAGA wish to bring to the attention of Council somne environmiental issues that, weigh heavily against it. As this application is the first of its type in the larger Hamnlet of Kendal, we would like to put this gas station into context. The land in Kendal alid the imimediate viçinity is like a flo2od plain - flat and somewhat lowýer than the surrounding areal. The water table is high. and wells for the most part, are shallow Flooding is a frequent problem. Abutting the land proposed for rezoning -- directly to the east, is an environmentally protected zone which is the bed and valley of the Burnhamn branch of the headwaters of the Ganaraska River, and obviously the drainage will be in that direction." This commient was followed with a vivid description of a "frighteningly large" gasoline tank spili in the west Baseline road Letter to the Editor: Letter written to Mr. Don Lander, Canada Post Corporation - Dated August 7, 1991 Dear Mr. Lander: Today I received my paycheque - a pretty important item in this one-inicome famnily, no thanks to Canada Post! since 1 was on holidays last week my 'employer, mailed my checque. They paid 40e postage plus the Gouge & Screw Tax to have the federal mail service deliver said cheque to, my post box. The11y even took the trouble to put both my initiais alongside my surname, along with my full and correct addre ss, complete with postal code. Knowing Canada Post's penchant to be able to screw up a one-car funeral, they also put on their retumn address with the message 'RETURN TO POINT 0F MAILING". By the way, dîd I mention that this little outfit I work for has their own individual postal code! Anyway, one of your fine upstanding (oops, SOMETIMES STANDING UP) employees couldn't figure out how to deliver my mail to my address - what to do? Instead of retumning what was obviously a General Motors of" Canada paycheque to G.M., they area, Town of Newcastle in 1989. "An accident of titis type would, in our belief, do untold damage to the Stream, and quite possibly to the water sources of the Hamlet of Kendal." Appeals to the O.MB. were made, touching uDon serlous problems in the Veltri gas station proposal. A large number of Kendal and local residents said this gas station was neither needed nor wanted; it showed no respect for the rural neighborhood, the inantir growth of the Hamlet, nor the special qualities of the Ganaraska headwaters' region. Comments were also addressed tothe dangers o f a gas stationlocated at this particular and extremely sensitive river site on the Oak Ridges Moraine. The following items have been taken, slightly abbreviated, fromt another appeal: There should be BQ rezonting for any reason until - a) an environmental study of the local Ganaraska watershed proposed by Newcastie Council, to Durham Region, has been dealt with b) there is an Official Hamnlet Plan for Kendal c ) the Ministry of the Environmient proposed type"A revic\w, of the Ganiaraska hias been undertaken d) the full imrpact of surrounding farmi lands assemibled by land speculators for housing, is fully understood and properly dealt with. We are hoping that the majority of those 100 or so people concernied with this rezoning by-law will participate in the Hearings - scheduled for Thursday, 29th August, 10:30 am. and Friday 3th of August, at the Council Chambers, Town Hall, Bowmanville. Several appellants are meeting this week - and thLose of you planning to speak, are most welcome to attend. Please contact: SAGA's Kathy Guselle 983-9560; Niva or Julian Rowan 983-5393.ý Julian Rowan crossed off my address and forwarded my mail to someone in a different comrnunity, in a different township, in a different County, in a different postal code! Fortunately, he/she couldn't thinik of a different country to send( it to! Thie one saving grace is thiat the woman, who erroneously received my paycheque wa-s obviously much more adept than Canada Post. Without years of training, she was able to trace me by using my address and a phone book. To this ingenious lady, a sincere thankyou. After having now made the 12- 1/2 mile return trip, I now have my paycbeque. THANKS FOR NOTHING, CANADA POST. One can only imagine how long I would have had to wait for my money had my cheque fallen into unscrupulous hands. 1 could have applied for welfare, but it's unlikely that cheque would get here eîther. Co-incidently, nothing like this had ever happened before the recent closîng of our local post office in Newtonville. Sincerely, Robert R. MacDonald Letter to the Editor: Re: Peggy Mullan's column on High Taxes (July 10) Right on, Peggy! 1 would suggest that Gord Milîs heed your comments. I believe they represent the opinion of the vast majority of Ontario residents. Historically two things have accompanied the falI of great civilizations of the past. They are 1) spiritual and moral decay and 2) tax burdens increased to the extent that no one had incentive to produce., I was shocked when I first heard that the N.D.P. Government of Ontario had budgeted for a $9 .7 billion deficit. At least the Federal Government has realized that Canada caninot continue on its downward spiral into the poor bouse by running deficits of $30 billions per year. As much as most of us dislike the G.S.T., if the Fed's use the extra revenue to pay off the national debt, I think most Canadians will understand the reason behind it. The National deficit on a per capita basis is running approximately $30,000,000,000 divided by 27,000,000 = $1,100/yr. But consider the provincial deficit or $9,700,000,000 divided by 6,000,000 = $ ,600/yr. Imagine, the Provincial deficit per Ontario resident is approximately 50% higher thian the Federal deficit and most Canadians realize the seriousness of the Federal deficit! In Gord's View, June 26, hie quotes CONRAD BLACK as saying 'Ontario will pay dearly for Complain Iack o f input inump search Memibers of thie Durham Region Waste Reduction Committee are expressing a view that the Region will have little say in the provincial dump-search within the region. The provincial process is coming into action to find a dump in Durham for Durham, a dump in Peel,,and one for Metro and York Regimn. Durham through their own efforts had a process in action to find a short-term dumup (Whitevale) and a long-term dump of which five sites had been chiosen for further study, one being nlorth of Orono between tie sixth and seventh fie. Ruth Grier, Mini;ster of the Environment, announiced in April that the province wouid take over the whole issue of garbage disposal in the Greater Toronto Area. It is now expected that it will not be umtil 1996 that a Durham dump will be establishied. Members of Regional council are stating that this will cause the Region to establish a transfer Station at a cost of millions of dollars. The station would have to be in use upon the closîng of the Brock West dump site expected to close in late 1992. Bobby Orr scores for hospital fund Bobby Orr who used to thrill hockey fans in Oshawa during his junior days in the city has assisted in a promotion which has netted the Oshawa General Hospital fund an amnount of $8296. The funds came from his share of a sale of posters of Orr and its mindless submission to the N.D.P.;" also "the $9.7 billion deficit is the result of a wild irresponsible spending spree." Then he asks "what do you think?" Thanks, Peggy, for responding to his question. Then he goes on to belittle the virtues of doing business in the U.S. by stating that "the Buffalo transit bas been shut down through lack of funds" and "New York decided to switch off every fourth street light." That is known as restraint, Gord, something tha~t future Ontario Governments will bc required to exercise. Without it, taxes wîll have to go sky high or Ontario will become one of the "have flot provinces." Gien Tamibln Bomb threat at lawn bowling tournament The stately game of lawn bowling was interrupted last week, at the Oshawa Lawn Bowling club when police received a cail of a bomb on the property. At the time a provincial, event was heing held at the club. The property was searched with no bomb found.
