Stevenson states Veldhuis- action not necessary Study coming The following statemenit was made Augusi l4th by Ross Stevenson, M.P. for Durham, regarding the hunger strike by Mr. John Veldhuis ai the Port Granby, Ontario, low-level radioactive waste site. Wbile I cani readily understand and sympathize with Mr. Veldhuis . concern about this matter, I'm surprised he felt compelled to take such action when it so obviously is not necessary. I said in my letter to him on July i6th that the federal Cabinet has approved Phase- IV of the Siting Process and that I expected the announicement to be made soon. It will be. In fact, the Minister of Energy bas bold me all that's holding tbis up -is confirmation fromt the person they, wish to be chairman of the Task Force, and who bas been away. Presurnably that should be settled and the announcement made within the next week or SO. One has to be puzzled by the motive for this bunger strike. Mr. Veldhuis knows how to contact me, and does so quite regularly. Yet,, alîhougb I understand bie began ihis protest on Sunday, the first we heard about it was when the news media called my office on Monday aftemnoon. As Ive said to Mr. Veldhuis, while ibis radioactive waste bas been a long- standing concerni to resîdents in the Port Granby area and elsewhere, it was only wben the present govemment was elected ini 1984 that Ottawa for the firsi lime ever accepte d any governmental responsibiliiy for the problem. We have every intention of seeing the SiLing Process through 10 uts conclusion. But everyone concerned bas known from the outset that it would be a lengthy, complicated and very expensive undertaking.
