Funding for'-an NDP proposed bus service to li n k Peterborough, Port Perry and-other areas"With the GO service in Whitby and General Motors is just not available. Due to an estimated cost of $2 million a year the Ministry of Transportation bas informed local governments that the service will not be fordhcoming. It bad been estimnated that the service using four buses would have cost $500,000 however after a number of montbs of study the service was found to cost close to a $2 million mark. The decision to scrap the implementation of the service has brought cheers from those who have been pushing for the return of rail service from Peterborough into Toronto. This service came to an end when the federal government closed out the VIA rail service in 1990. Members of the Toronto- Peterborough-Havelock Line Passengers' Association have said no one wanted a bus service and it would not be used. The bus îndustry proposals for a daîly ridership of 225 retumn trips would result in an average subsidy of $13.52 per ride. The minister has said in today's economic condition that was just too much. The rinistry. admits that, the original estirnate was a way off base. The bus service would have been available to residents of Orono and Newcastle. It is understood that the Ministry of Transportation is to complete a review of transportation in southern Ontario by the end of this year. There is no guarantee that it will recomxnend a train service as was formerly in place witb the VIA Peterborough-Toronto service.
