It is traditional that the week following Remembrance Day is spent away froni the Legislature and in the riding. On Remnembrance Day I attended die service at the Cenotaph in Bowmanville. The weather wasnt much to write home about, but nevertheless it did not discourage a fine turnout, which was great to see. On Tuesday 1 spent the day at the constituency office making up for the day I1rissed the previous Friday, when 1 was in Gravenhurst for the Solicitor General. On Wednesday, the staff, froin my Bowmanville and Toronto offices, met with me for a broad discussion about our first year or so, of serving mhe people of Durhami East. We isolated mhe things that we felt could be improved upon, and generally settled on a agenda for the next year designed to iniprove upon our performance to date. If you called ast Wednesday and only found the answering machine "ion- call" that was me reason. On Thursday, I took mhe day off and went to a reunion of rny old unit at Base Borden to meet and and reminisce with my old military colleagues. The effects of the Federal cut-backs for the Armed Forces were very rnuch in evidence. As a rule we get a small lunch and a tour of mhe base by bus to look at all the old familiar places. This time we were told mhere wasnf t a bus, and we would have to use,. ur own cars. Our complimentary lunch consisted of a couple of boyvls of popcorn placed at each table!! As we choked and spluttered on the popcorn, many strange adjectives were muttered, rnost often intermixed with Brian Mulroney's name. One exciting piece of news from last week came from the Minîster of Health. TheMinister announced a launch of a new benefit for seniors suffering froni diabetes. The Senior's Syringe Programn will now cover about 75 per cent of the cost of syringes for seniors with diabetes. 1 arn pleased with this positive step in recognizing the needs of senior diabetics. Another blow to our recovery last week was the Federal Transfer Payment Shortfall. The federal government collects personal income tax on behaîf of the province. Each year (usually February) the federal government forecasts, based on several factors, the amount of revenue they expect to coie.ct on behaif of Ontario. On the hasis of these federal forecasts, the province cornes up with its own projections on how much tax will be collected froni this source. This nuniber is put into our budget. Last week, Ottawa informed the Treasurer that Ontario's revenues frorn personal incorne tax. are down $2.1 billion front what was prjce. That means Ottawa overpaid the province, and we must ii10w pay them back. The very intense recession, from which we, are only now starting.to recover, bas led to this income tax shortfall. 1 remain confident that there are better days ahead for everyone. Until next week - be kind to one another. 4In-m e * e - * * *............e To the Residents of Ward I111 I would like to express my Ithanks to ail those who supported and assisted me during my election campaign.
