Council takes action for name change The only business of counicil on Monday evening other than the passing of a necessary by-law was to stant the ball rolling as to a namne change.. A motion was presented by Counc. Hooper that the Mayor and the Chief Administrative Officer, Larry Kotseff, meet with representatives of the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs to seek information as to the process of a name change. The two are to report back to council and as well report to the Region of Durham. The motion was passed unanimously. Following dhe meeting dhe many who attended the opening of council enjoyed refreshments and a social time as well as expressing congratulations to the members of counicil. Members of council appoinited to liaise with local departments George Yarwood of the Ministry of Skills Development, Gail McKenzie, head of Co-op Education at Clarke, Rob Rowe, Clarke Co-op student and Elaine and John Van Wieringen taking part in the signing of an Apprenticeship program which will be undertaken at Pine Valley Quality Meats Ltd. Pontypool and at George Brown College. Through the co-operation of Pine Valley Quaiîy Meats Ltd. of Pontypool, the Clarke High School Co-op Education pro- ~. gram and The Ministry of Skills Development, Rob Rowe, a grade 12 student at Clarke, has been embarked on an appreni- tice programn in mieat cutting. All Ithree parties, the employer, Pine Valley Quality Meats, the Ministry and Rob Rowe signed the agreement on Monday morning at the meat processing plant, just south of Pontypool. According to Gail McKenzie, head of the Clarke Hig-h Schiool Co-op) programi, il is the first such application in apprentice- ship signed by a student ai Clarke. She was miost pleased with the signing event. Rob Rowe hias been part of a Co-op program at Pine Valley Quality meats and states McKenzie has already compiled some 400 hlours towards the ap- prenticeship programi whîch re- quires a total of 7200 hours, somne four years to complete. In signing for the appren- ticeship pro-gram Rob Rowe will take 540 hours at the George Brown College which are in- cluded in the overaîl 7200 hours. The program "Secondary Sehool Workplace Appreni- ticeship Program" (SWAP) has been developed by the Ontario Ministry of Skills Development. George Yarwood of the appren- ticeship Ser-vices Branch was presenit on Monday to sign the contract between the affected parties. The apprenticeship program is not a new venture f'or John, and Ela,,îne Van Wieringen of Pine Valley Quality Meats Ltd. as one apprenticeship programn is just about completed at the processing plant. Van Wieringen states there is presently need for more hielp at the plant due to an increased volume being processed in customi killîng and cuitting. He said due to some aspects of the current recession voIlume has in- creased in meat processing for the local firm. The George Brown portion of the programi will be scheduled to accommnodate the employer at Pine Valley. When the application was all signed and sealed Rob Rowe was ready to get back to his duties at Pine Valley. A by-law was passed at the inaugural meeting of the Town of Newcastle council on Monday evening appointing various council members as liaison members of the various departments. Atm Dreslinski was appointed as liaison member for the Community Services Department, Larry Hannah liaison for Public Works, Ken Hooper for the fire department; Mary Nowak for the clerk's office; John O'Toole, finance and David Scott, Hydro Liaison chairman. A by-law was also passed to appoint memnbers to the Town of Newcastle Library Board. Many attend- Inaugurai meeting of Town council There were four new faces around the Town of Newcastle. council table on Monday evening when the inaugural meeting was held. Those making their first appearance were Ann Dreslinski as Regional council, Ward Three; Mary Novak, local councillor, Ward One; John OToole, local councillor Ward Two and David Scott, local counicillor Ward Three. The inaugural meeting was called to order by the clerk Patti Barrie followed by the singing of 0 Canada lead by the Deputy Clerk, Marie Knight. Invocation was given by Reverend Douglas Hall, Rector of St. Georges Anglican Church of Newcastle. The Rev. offered congratulations and blessings and as well said that members should think for themselves. He also called for a caring society within the municipality. Gord Milîs, M.P.P. Durham East, congratulated the elected for their decision to seek public office and noted that it was a difficult time to be a politician in Canada. He said,"you feel very optimistic tonight and many things you want to accomplish during your terni of office". "I share your excitement and wish you success".
