Question tenders for new centre A trustee cf the Durham School Boardhas questiened the calling cf tenders for a new administrative centre, school and works depot when thiere are other needs in the educational system. It was stated that very littie information as te the centre has been offered the nine new mem bers that joined. It was the previeus board that had given approval cf the complex with a school and a works depot and calling for debenturing in an amounit cf $17 million. Osha~wa Hospital to expand dialysis system The Oshawa General Hlospital is te receive a $3 million grant from the province for expansion cf its dialysis services within the> community. The mcney will allow, the hospital; te expand its hemadialysis program te serve an additional number patients while a peritoneal dialysis program will be added te serve 53 patients. The additional funding province-wide, is the final phase of a $23 million dialysis service program started in 1989-90 by the province in a co-operative plan with the Kidney Foundation, nephrologists, health councils and hospitals. Regional councillors want some action Regional councillors are somnewhat upset over the gaining of final, approval for a new Ajax water plant. The Minister of the Envîronment bas yet te make a decision as te whether a full environmental hearing will be required for the contentious $61 million prcject. The decision could mean an exten sion of three te five years on the completion date of the water plant. The new plant would pump upwards cf 36 million gallons a day comparing with 12 million gallons at the presen t ti me. New building looks to future Trinity College School in Port Hope has opened its new $2.5 million life-sciences and computer studies building recently as it also celebrated the 1 27th anniversary cf the school. The building has been in use since the first cf the year and it bas been said the future cf the schocl is'what gees on inside the building in studies in computers and in thec science labs. OFAH faces hate literature probe There appears te have been, grounds for the OPP hecadiquarters te investigate allegations cf hate statements made by the Ontario Fed(eritioin cf AngIls and Hunters at a Inccting ili Apsley in March. The statements are attributed te articles distributed by the OFAH indicating hatred against First Nation people. Somne 1000 attended the Apsley meeting. There hias been fiction between the OFAH and natives since last summer over treaties and legislation that allow natives te hunt and fish throughout the year. The announcement came reCently with other Canada advancements for the.company in which $74 million is te be invested. Plants in Cobourg, Scarborough and two in Quebec are all beîng expanded. Empîcyment at Cobourg is expected te remain constant until possibly 1993 wheni additional workers could be hired. Some permanent staff were reduced in Cobourg in 1989. The food bank has operated out of the basement ofthe Port Hope United Church for the past five years. Marks and Spencer stores to remain The Marks and Spencer stores located in Oshawa and Pickering are te remnain open following announicemnent that a numnber of such stores are being closed. The comnpany is closing one- third of their stores in Canada but keeping the profitable open of which the two stores in Durham are such ventures. The Minister cfEducation has said that changing the financial arrangements with boards 'is the key te, reform and the system. Boards of Eds- set budget Both the Durham Separate School Board and the Public Board have set their budgets for 1992. The Durham Public Board has set a rate increase for their taxpayers of 3.67 percent while the Separate School board has increase the tax rateby 3.7 percent. The total budget fer the Separate Board was set at $132.7 million while the Public Board budget camne in at $358.1 million. Signs to coach pro hockey George Burniett, a native of Port Perry, has signed as coach of the Cape Breton Oilers of the Amnerican Hlockey League. The Cape Breton club is an affiliate cf the Edmionton Oilers. For the pasttthree, yeas Burnett has been behind the bench of the Niagara Fali Thunder of the Ontario Hockey League. Will assess mandatory over- time aspects General Motors will wait until its trial run with the new mandatory over-time deal is completed before it makes an assessment of the plan.
