Forrester, Owner-Editor Subscription $1 6.00 per anrium I4*cfe 6T> To hold or flot hold a hearing Detox Environmental Ld., Bennett Road, Newcastle, proposai for a Provisional Certificate to operate a Waste Processlng/rransfer facility has aroused considerable comment and objection from citizens and landowners in the intended area of the facility. This is nothing new for every Urne a work or process that handies hazardous wastes cornes forth it is soon followed by a mirad of protest. It is flot that people shouldn't be concerned but there is another side to a Proposai such as being presented by Detox. We are in an industrial complex in which toxic and harzardous wastes are created and will continue to be created. In the past this waste has found it way to the dump areas, open Iands, ou r waterways to the extent that the Great Lakes are polluted and much land contaminated. There has been littie improvement in this process and horror stories do exist. It would appear that a facility such as Detox is proposing should be given serious consideration. It is a matter of re-use and recycle and it should be undertaken at a central location where environmentaî concerns are flot only specified but controlled. We often read over the past couple of years that environmentaî protection and evironmental works are- the growth areas for employment in the future as well as the oniy solution for a healthier future and environment. Environmentalists have to take a lead on the positive side rather than the "No" syndrome. New prooesses for reclaiming and re-using Must gain support. Taking our own case at the Orono -Fîmes. Thirty-five years ago we used but one chemnical if you cali gasoline as a cleaning agent a chemnical. Today it is a very different story where there are some twelve chemicaîs used in the process. As it is a limited amount of chemicals it is difficult to safely dispose of many that are in a liquid form. At this poi nt in Urne we have to depend on the Ministry of the Environment and Most imporantly there must be some faith in the Ministry. Yes, again, we hear horror stories but there is no better place to turn. The cali is for an Environmentaî Assessment Hearing but many of the complaints that have been registered, land values, traffic congestion will not be handled by such a hearing. The hearing will only have concern of the natural envirofiment. The objections are really, in a sense, questioning the ability of the Ministry of the Environment, to act in the interest of the natural envirofiment. Let us have some faith and see if we cannot improve the polluting priocess that has been going on for years. Happenins...
