ýO-rono Wel Timies, WedsdyOcoe7,92-I Wyheel of Fame Mayor Hamre speaks to Business Women Ferris wheel ready to nmove frorn Orono Fair Grounds by Ryan Tornlinson Amongst the iost crying children, the man in the apron and beard heckling you to toss a bal into a basket and the srnall gatherings of alike social types rewarding thernselves with french frices and stuffed spotted rnonkeys, it stands. It stands so taîl if you were able to hurdle clear over the top of it, you would grind your bonies to dust landing on the other side. t stands so taîl, the flashinig lights are not for show,-but are to guide low flying aircrafts around it'. It stands so taîl that Jack would have needed no beanstalk, but rather a buck and a half to take him to the top. A wheel 6f lights and uniforrned dashes of reds, blues and yellow paints, it tumns. Lt turns with enormous strength and energy the energy that a paddle- wheeler hias travelling up a white capped current. Thie whecel carnecs its passengers as a mother would to her newborn child, s0 gentle and cautious. Each person at the fair hias thecir turn on the Ferris Wheel. To ail things unfortunately, therenust corne an end. !lt seemns that aIl the good "stuff" cornes to an end much faster, than say getting a tooth pulled or having an ugiy bandaid removed. The fair is over, only leaving behind perfect squares of flattened grass; whiere the tents filled with challenge once stood, and of course wonderful memnories. Ln any case the ferris whieei rnay have been the bridge of love that brought you and your girlfriend to kiss for the first tirne, it rnay very weil have been the leprechauns pot of gold, wheni you found $10, dropped frorn the couple before, so you can now ride it alI night long. The once gigantie spinning whecel of blinking iights has iost its shine and hias retired itseif to becorning a pile of twisted protruding mectal towed f'rorn behind a serni-transport. As if the night sky was filled with oniy the brighitest stars and planets, then al at once hid fromn behind the grayest clouds. The ferris wheel is rnagically folded up and tucked a-way into sor-nething onlly a quarter its size. For the niext crowd it wili work a.gain and please the people just the saine.
