The statement is true. And it is effective, ge-tting the message across in very blunt and direct termns. t is flot a message that beats aro und the bush. But perhaps it would be more effective if it read: 'Lots of People Lie - Protect Yourself.' Hey, women lie, too. Minorities lie. Educated people lie. Those whom we look up to lie. The plain truth is everyone lies, at least about some small things. You have to be careful who you believe. And when it cornes to the possibîlity of contracting the HIV virus, why trust anyone unless you are in a monogamous relationship. Lying about having the HIV virus isn't a small fib. This is a lie that could change your entire life, sometimes fatally. The risks these days are just by Ryan Tomlfinson 1 was fully stocked withil the journalistic essentials one could have. My pad of lined paper, soon to be overflowing with bits and pieces of scrawled information, and my pen right beside me. My partner for the day', Ca rol Ann, and 1 arrived on the scene promptly, without any doubt that this would be another corne and go mission. We vacated our car and began eyeing the terrain. A gentleman passing by us noticed the camiera dangling from mny partners neck. 'Trom die Ipress?"e far.to great. More and m-ore people are finding out that they have at sometime contracted the HIV virus. The statisties are getting higher and higher. And at the same time they are getting scarier, and scarier. But again, it isn't really fair to blame only the men. Safe sex in these times is everyone's responsibility. When you -et in a car, you dont hoid the driver responsible if you aren't wearing your seatheit and you have an accident. So is it really fair to blame only the men for the spread of AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases? As Helen MacDonald reported lastwe, the number of ,womnen who are carrying the AIDS virus is growing alarmingly. So though the statemecnt on the button is effective in its message, it is unfair. The finger is being pointed and the blamne is falling directly at the feet of the men. Just do yourself a favour. Look out-for number one. And remeinber... "Everyonec Lies- Protect Yourself. " "From the press", I said to myseif, "Is there more of US." My partnier replied to the man "'Yes we are"; She was obviously more relaxed than 1 in attending the press conference for the World Orienteering competition at the Ganaraska Forest Centre. We were directed to enter through a do or into a building Ilreserved for the press". 1 muttered 1 had neyer even made reservations for a dinner nor even for a video tape from the local movie store. We entered the room. It was large where your voice echo throughout. Lt was here- that chairs were laid out in a row before a television set with haîf already taken up hy men and women with thecir pads of paper and pen-s gripped loosely by dhir fingers., - We introduced ourselves as being from the Orono Timies. Again 1 announced to only myseif that this must be "Press Conference". 1 had only witnessed these from the sofa, watching the press go one-on-one with the president or prime minister. My partner and 1 contînued about our business and prepared ourselves for the event. Out came the paper and pens. I noticed there was a familiar way to sit as 'a reporter - legs crosIsed with the pad of paper resting on top of the leg. I quickly assumed the position. You could have mistaken me for Geraldo without question. The speaker came forth, introducing himself withi this followed by the press crew announcing their association, Oshawa This Week, Toronto Star! 1 was runniing with the big boys now. We were, on our way, the speaker began with his speech, thec reporters' eyes were glued on the speaker. Each wvore the samie expression - like - if you don't -imipress me your career is history. They started to write and a piece of vital information caught my attention, 1 wrote, I wrote one word and that was it. Lt is flot that I only intended to write one word. That was ali I was able to as my pen had packed it i. 1 frantically scribbled trying to maybe break it in or jump-start it. I looked down the line and the reporters were flipping to their second page. I sat there trying to look busy but at the samne time concealing the one word. My partner had the camera so 1 could flot disguise myself only as photographer. As the other wrote frantically 1 sat there with my head in the clouds. This went on for an hour and 1 had run out of ideas how to disguise myself from being an absolute waste. News report Brrr, you know that summer sure flew by, can you believe it's October already. Halloween is coming around the bend and that brings bad news raking the lawn. We've been in school for about a month now and we are starting back into the routine. Most of our work is easy with the odd hiard assignment. 1 We have somie new teachers this year in our sehool. Mrs. Bird our new libr-arian, Mrs. -Vesna is our new custodian and taking over our educational assistant job is Mrs. Warwick. We've also had some teachers leave us Ms. Prouix, Miss Doherty, Mr. Lunn, Mrs, Clifford and Mrs. Lawrence. Also at our sehool is a sports system called house league, based on sportsmanship and fun. We also have sehool teams for soccer, But a press conference appears to be like a contest of who can ask the best questions. To top that off I asked no questions at ail - actually no one did except the reporter from the Star - the beady-eyed person he was. I suppose our team made up for the loses - 1 should say my lose - as we were the last to leave the press conference. basebaîl and volleyball there, are[ series of tryouts and the best ge>ýr picked. W-e play against other schools and have a big toumnament at the end to determine the champ. About the people at our schoeol, there was one well known one his name was Mr. Lunn who just retired at the beginning of the year. He had been at Orono since the ear ly 70's. We wish hîm the best of luck. Well you know everyone wants a dlean environment well now the school's into environmental awareness. The person who runs it is Mr. T. Spurrell. A lot of people like this program and a lot of kids are now taking care of our enivironmiient staring on the school yard. Our new librarian Mrs, Bird has put a lot into our ibrary. She's changed it around and got some new books in, Shes also set up a system called lîbrary catalogue. It's a systemn on the computer that helps you find books.
