Last wcek I told you about plenty of programs and activities tbat bave recently been set up in Newcastle for the young ones. Have you checked out Tales for Twos at the Newcastle Lîbrary yet? How about the Newcastle Family Connection and. their ballet and dancersize classes? Or the Small Miracles Child Development Centre. Well, now you can add to the already long list of children's activities ... skating. TMe Newcastle Village Arena bas skating for children and their parents every Wednesday moming. Best wishes and hopes for a happy and healthy retirement to Newcastle native Judge Lovekin. A dinner was held in his honor last Tbursday. Details of this story can be found in the pages of the Times this week. That's all for now. See you next âmne. Queen's Park Report from Gord Mils, MPP Durharn East The big news last week, down at the "Park", was of course the cabinet shuffle. My analysis in last week's column proved to be correct. And 1 wasn't privy to any "insiders" knowledge eitber! One newspaper reporter described the sbuffle as re- arranging the deck-cbairs on tbe Titanic. Our governiment, right from the beginning, bas been subjected to the most vicious sniping any Ontario government bas ever faced. It's like listening to a broken record. The critics want to bave it botb ways. If we cut government spending - as we bave done dramatically in every ministry - the reaction is outrage. "How cold bearted can tbe NDP bc" wail die extremists. But wben the government mrates jobs tbrough spending on social bousing, capital works, and infrastructure, the line suddenly zhanges. "Spendthrifts!" "Naive foots!" "Beverly biîlbillies!" - they zan't run a peanut stand cry tbe zolumnists. We bave come through, in ifficult turnes too, on rent control. Rmployment equity. Social riousing, Restructuring of the health care system. Wage protection for workers whose ompanies fold. Sustainable forestry. Environimentally sound Aanning policy. Non-profit cbild ,are. But neyer satisfied, when we .ake this leadership, the skeptics 0f course we bave had our roblems. Wbat governiment iasn't? It sbouldn't be any great tews that many NDP activists, in idditions to Peter Kormnos and Iennis Drainvile, bave strongly lisagrced with government ictions. Perfect harmony and ;olidarity do not reign witbin the 'JDP or its caucus. I can assure iou that the Liberals at Queen's >arký are not blessed with perfect aarmony and solidarity either. Tbe NDP bave made some nistakes. Some individual "bone leaded" bebaviour by cabinet ninisters I bave deplored as mucb is our barsbest critc. But we bave mplemcnted reforms that no otber Yovernment bas dared to do. J)espite constant criticism and iscal attack, we bave gone to the ;val time and again for tbe rulnerable and the marginalized. Witb tbe budget Iooming, the aelnes will once again screarn hat the deficit bas, "ballooned," "soared," and "skyrocketecd." Al the while, when Mulroney misses bis budget by almost $10 billion, tbe story sleeps on Page 3 of tbe business section. The federal government bas cut billions in transfer payments, forcing the unemployed off federal programs and on to provincial ones. We will tbe faced with even further costs tbirougb the denial of unemployment be-nefits to tho§e, who for one reason or another, decide to leave their job "witbout just cause!" Getting back to local issues. Trees for spring planting are now available at the Orono Forest Station. They bave a good selection of stock but there are some restrictions. You must have at least five acres to plant on, the trees are 10 cents each, the minimum order is 100, and there is an administration fee of $ 10. Once again, the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and the Ministry of Culture, are providing non-profit organizations witb an opporturnty to bring the names and achievements of their volunteer staff to tbe forefront of the public's attention by nominating tbemn for a Volunteer Service Award or an Outstanding Achievement Award. If you wisb to nomninate an adult volunteer for 5, 10, or 15 consecutive yea-rs of service, and youth volunteers who are 18 years or under for two or more years of service, please contact my office in Bowmanville for details. Until next week - rememnber, we ail have a choice, to plough new ground or just let the weeds grow. Oshawa councillors approve Second Marsh plan Osbawa bas approved a management plan for the Oshawa Second Marsb which marsh was recently turned over to the city. The accpetance of he marsh and a management plan by Osbawa was a dream come true for Jim Richards of Orono. Richards bas wage a battie for 22 years to save tbe marsh from development. Ricbards states the plan maps out rehabilitation plans and bis next objective is to assist to raise funding for the work. ReqLaeS* *0 ,,Êrect. Memnrial Plaque h.Carol-Anýrn Oster donation. Between the period of May and mid Noveniber last year waste thrown out WaS reduced by 53 percent. Th(, Gazette also points out that in May a weeks check showed -,33.02 lbs. of waste collected while in November that was reduced to 156.5 lbs. 1in some areas waste was reduced as high as -100 percent with a lot of figures showing a 70 percent or more reducation. The Green Gazette also outlined other efforts which it was felt could be targeted to further reduce waste at the Centre. A comm~endable project showing good results. "-First time home buyers hit market place Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation points to 2,026 housing units being sold in the Oshawa and area district last year under the CMHC's First Home Loan Insurance Plan. 'Me numbers in this area was among the highest in the country where 68,806 households used the program. It bad been expected that the plan would have attracted 20,000 units over a two year period. The response to the program bas been overwhelming. The success of the program is being attributed to a number of factors, including stable or dropping mortgage rates, relatively low housing prices, and a wider selection of affordable resale housing in the major metropolitan areas. The Corporation confirms that first turne buyers have moved into the market d.ue to the program.
