Amendment made to Town by-law affecting changes zto management of the Orono Arena The Town of Newcastle General Purpose committee has i. recommended to counicil the passing of a amending by-law under which conditions the Orono Arvna Community Centre will be operated in the future. The by-law sets the Mrena and Community centre to be under the management of a board te be appointed by council. The board will consist of two members of council, two members from the Orono Athletic Society, two members fromri the Durham Central Agricultural Society and two memnbers from Clarke Township are te be nomninated te the board at a public meeting to be called by the Town of Newcastle. The appointments will be in effect te the end of the year, 1993, and hence on a yearly basis. The board is to hold a minimum of four meetings in a calendar year. One of the meetings shaîl be a formal- Annual meeting duning which the officers of the Board are to be elected. The Board shall fix the time and place of the meetings. Many of the regulations in the original by-law still govern the board in the management of the arena and community centre. The major change comes in the setup of the board and the fact of calling public meetings. The recommendation goes to counicil this coming week and then the Town will advertise a public meeting. The Durham Farmers' County Co-operative, Orono, held their 45th annual meeting and banquet last week with a sell-out number in attendance. The event featured Bob Proctor, as guest speaker. Proctor is an internationally acclaimed Motivationalist author of the book "You Were Rom Rich". Proctor told his audience, Don't be afraid to make decisions an.d that human development is a process of which the individual has control if they s0 wish." Proctor said he leamned how to get results while others spent \their timne in getting degrees. He spoke of positive thinking and taking positive action. The annual meeting gave authonity te the board te continue in the oil business as an agency for MP. Under the arrangement UPI will pay, the local Co-op some $9 1,000 outright and annual revenue te the Co-op as an agent is expected te reach $19.00)0. Being and agent in the oil business was one of tiiree options available to the Co-op . The United Co-operative of Ontario is now in partniershipwith Sunoco and this new partnership required a decision for the local Co-op. 1It was pointed out that the oil business will continue as in the past with service and billing from (Continued page 3) Three years later and no dloser to lot for new home A tornade that ripped through a section of Clarke Township in August 1990 and especially in the Crooked Creek area where a dwelling was demolished is still having reprocussions for the Town of Newcastle. As a resuit of the tornado a Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd George were left homeless with the destruction of the home in which tbey were ren ti ng. Council in September of 1990 and acting on behaif of a Mr. William Plaxton sought to have lands owned by Plaxton severed for a home for the Georges south of the fourth concession road and on the west side of the Newtonville,-Kendal Road, Crooked Creek as well as having clearance for the build'ing of a residential dwelling. The proposaI, as passed in ~1990, has not been cleared through all concemned provincial ministries and te clear up matters the Town now seeks to have the area designated a Rural Cluster so0 that approval may be gyained fromn the province. The application was submitted to a public meeting on Monday where Jack Ogden of the Crookvd Creek area said that he and neighibours objected to the designation of the area as a Rural (Continued page 3) Happenings. ..
