The Durham East Liberal Association held their annual meeting last week at Greystone Inn, Scugog Township. Dave Kiff, Darlington was elected president of- the Association wîth Ken Carruthers elected executive vice-president. Pat Coathamn was elected membership;. Mary Clare McKinnon, secretary; Bill Leask, Kendal, treasurer; Debbie Nolan was elected lst vice president; Derek Baird, 2nd Vice and Mark Steerman elected 3rd vice president. 1Marilyn Pearce, past president reported on the past year's activities. Three of the four candidates seeking the federal nomination as candidate for'Durham riding addressed the gathering. Alex Shepherd, who operates an acceunting practice in Port Perny along with the operation of a cash crop and beef farm operation stated that Free Trade hadidled Canadian workers nesulting in vacant factories. He suggesis government boanguarantees te small businesses and farm operatiens te ensure ful employment. He also called for the elimination of government deficits. Shepherd spoke of Free Trade and the low wage rate in Mexico. 'Me company now meves te Newcastle Village te undertake a similar pnject and then will meve into Bewmanvîlleý where some 1000 new lights will be installed. 1Dundas Power Line has been contraceteti by the Town of Newcastle te install new High Pressure Sodium street lighting in the Town. The new High Pressure Sodium street lights are energy efficient which creates a considerable saving for the Town. As well the new iights will bu, mainten-ance_ free cempared te, the existîng lighting that bas been in service fer a gooti number of years. New arms are aise being installed, te carry the adtiitienal weight of the new lighting units The project is being undertaken through a plan with Ontario Hydre which gives some financial benefits te the municipality. Within twe te thnee years the Town will save enougli in power costs te pay for the refitting of the street lighting untien the Tewn's jurisdiction.
