Cameraman Riçk, Dade got Bubs to put on some -old f-irefigbting regalia and took shots of her at the wheel of a truck. Since shes a tiny wornan, tbe coat was dragging on the ground a,-ýhc clapped around in the big rubber boots. 1 was curious about how she became involved in the project. "My grandfather was a fireman," sbe said, "and 1 live across from the fire hall and I've always been interested in the work and equipment. It's been a labor of' love bere, and during the summer months I'm on the job seven days a week, but I wouldn't have it any other way.' And what does her husband think of it all? "He doesnt mind. Hes a lw bowler," sbe laugbed. The skirl of the pipes, tbe sway of the kilts and the skill and strength of Scottish athlests thrill thousands every year at the l-ighland Games ini Fergus. The Western Ontario Town cornes by its Scottish celebrations with honest credentials. It was founded early in the l9th century by two wealthy Scots, Adam Ferguson and James Webster, who sought out other Scots of upstanding character to settle the area. Stone masons soon erected grey limestone buildings that echoed the architecture of their native land. The Scottish stone inasons knew their stuff. Many of the houses they buiît arc still thiere. Squat and solid. And tbeie are small plaques on them givîîîg the" names and occupations of the original owners. You can take a walking tour armed with a pamphlet wbich has historical sketches about each building, -and relive thie days when the dour scots carved out a new life in the New World. We took tbeý tour with Pat Mestern who knows Fergus and its beritage like the back of ber hand. Pat has written three historical novels set in the early days. Apparently, a few eyebrows were raised by some of die locals when they read about the shinanigans of their ancestors. Jenny had read the books and the two of tbem were chuckling about the characters. Some of tbe houses went back to 1829. 1 saw wbere the blacksmitb and locksmitb lived. The plaque on William Rennie's house said he was a farmer. Ibis appeared to be rather strange since it \va rigbt in the middle of a residuiitiaî drea. But it seems he built the bouse so bis wife and daugbitcr (,,uld participate in the social hie A t1ie town. Onc oi Iibe large bouses was occupied by George Ferguson, son of the f ounder of Fergus. His plaque lists bim as "gentleman". He was actually a banker, but in those days banking wasn't considered a respectable business by the Scots. The oldest bouse was built by Hugh Black in 1835. He arrived with 13 cbjîdren and seven wagon loads of furniture. The townsfolk figured he was the one to build the tavern since no one else had enough chairs. It's just another of the tidbits of information you get while wandering around a town th-at positively bristles with history.
