2- Oosi WeklyTmes Wen.sdy, oveber à3,1003 Kecndal Column Another shocker Last week our medical systemn through a report that had tracked 37,447 breast cancer surgery patients in Ontario from 1980 through to 1989 left many women in titis province in wonderment. The new study reveals that a large number of women are receiving more disfiguring mastectomies than is believed -to be medicaily warranted. The resuit means that women with breast cancer could go ta one Metro hospital or to other in the province and get a lumpectomny yet drive a few miles down the road and ha told by a surgeon that the entire breast needs to ha removed. The report is being cailed very disturbing by many involved in breast cancer organizations. A Dr. Roy Clark, radiation oncologist, called the research resuits very disturbing and surprising. He further states that that it has haen shown quite conclusively that lumpectomy, coupled with radiation trnent is as good as mastectomy unless the tumor is very large. Betty Jane Hassleback, a Ifounder of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation recommends that patients get "two or three medical opinions fromn doctors in different hospitals" before making a decision on surgery. Disturbing as this is it is not a new phenomena of some in the medical profession. Not so long ago the issue of caesarean came hafore the public and again like breast cancer it appears that it was overplayed and over subscrihad by the medical profession. 1We also read that in the case of heart by-passes 60 percent were not needed and the problem could have been treated by other means. And then you can go backto the good aid medical make-work program of removal of adenoids and tonsils. Where is the medical associationthat cari ha so firey when it cornes to a physician's remuneration and the operatian of the medical systemn in this province. What is'their comment on such practices that m ake abuse of the healthof those as subscrihars to the public medical system. This is not good enough. The public should not ha so used or abused. It is lime that standards are met. Craft show slated Nov. 18 The Orono Hall Board is iooking at November 18th as Uic date for the annuai Christmas Craft Show at Uic Orono Hall. The show wouid aiso continue oninto Saturday. 'Me board is ta seek assistance from the Orono Downtown Business Association in Organ- izing the annual Lighting of Christmas for November 18th. Dresiinski said it was poor planning and wouid be supparting the recommenidationi of the planning department. Counc. O'Toole moved that the proposai be referred back to the planning departrnent to carry on with discussion with the awners. The motion was secondcd by Counc. Hooper and carricd by a majority of council. by Phyllis Lowery ElectionjLime bas corne and gone, Uic flu or cold or whatever I have had is goig away, despite al these things, the world is still turning onits axis and timfe is passing. We have had our first taste of snow, it didn't stay on Uic ground very long, but it is a warning of what is coming in Uie near future. The daylight hours arc now shorter, now Uiat we arc back on standard time and it is time to get out the long johns and the winter coats. Skiing enthusiasts will bc praying for lots of snow and people like me, w il be hoping for as open winter. Driving around Uic village you can sec that many of Uic bouses are decorated for Halloween, Uis is Uic first ime I cas remember it being held on a Sunday, cither wc held it Saturday other years or my memory is failing. There was no, church service held in Kendal this Sunday, Uic Kendal congregation joined with Newtonville to celebrate their 126th Anniversary. Rev. Black welcomed everyonc. The opening hymn was, "Al People That On Earth Do Dwell". Ian_ Savage led in Uic Invitation to Warship and the Prayer of Approach. The hymn, "In Days Long Past" was sung then Ian gave the Prayer1 of Scîf-Examination and Uic Words of Assurance. The choir sang, "It Is A Good Day. Rev. Black cailed Uic children forward, he asked ahl of the children who regularly attended Newtonvile, to stand, then al Uic children that attended Kendal ta stand. There were a good numnber of children presenit. Then David asked the aduits of Newtonville, those frorn Shiloh and'Kendal ta stand. Then ail those that had corne from other places just to bc here on this Sunday. David told, Uiemthat this is what happens at Christmas, Easter, and other family celebrations. He asked Uiemn what were were celebrating today. We are celebrating 126 years of families gettling togeUier to Worship in Uis building, this church. The message Uiey shared ail those years is Uic samne message we share today, we love you, God loves you, each and everyonc. The children's hymn wvas "Jesus Loves Me." Mr. Denzil Dale was Uic guest speaker. Mr. Dale read from Deuteronomny 6: 4-12. The choir sang, "Follow Me." Mr. Dale Uicn' read frmmLuke 12: 16-21. Mr, Dale chose for Uic titie of his sermon, "Thanking God for Basics." Hie spoke on how glad he was ta bc in aur midst once agan. He spoke of how we thank God for the future as we think of the past. Anniversaries are fun get togethers of famiies, talk of Uings that have gone on before, a lime to note the changes. Many things hinge on Uic Anniversary date, for workers it is Uieir seniority date, for many Uic years Uiey have been togeUier as mas and wife. Mr. Dale said it was good ta corne into this church as he did today, see Uic choir getting ready, to sec things the saine and then as he entered, thc sanctuary, to see changes, some faces he kncw othcrs missing. As wc look around we sec changes, but the basic tnith, no matter what tic changes, rernains, ' tc Lord is our rock, our fortress, there is no better place to be than in the Lord's hands. Our âime isin his hands.' With so many changes, no religion i our schools, no Bible to take an oath on, no singig, "God Save thc Qucen". Isn't it lime to get back to thc basics? We need to get back to where we learned of' God. We nced to work, to accept Uic Scripturcs, they meanUic sainie today as yesterday. For Uic young people today, it is not easy to stand up for God, what wiUi al Uic cuits, thc lack of religion. How do we gct across to Uiem Uic basics? Mr. Dale told us a story of how he and, a fricnd when they were young, said to a minister, that they wantcd to become ministers when they grew up, how did Uiey do it? The minister just looked at them and finally said, forget it, stay away from it, unless they feit the irresistible need to become a minister, stay away from it. He told us that he doesn't know why, but something a teacher once taught hlm has always stuck with him. The four basics, how, whcn, whcrc, why? Now he uses thcm this way. How do I love God? Why do I love God? When? God rcally cails us, when you arc ready to make a personal commitrnent. Where? Whcrcvcr you are, flot just on Sunday at church, at farnily prayer, while waiking, at anytime of Uic day. Wc should bc glad to talk of Uic Love of God, we like to talk of Uic love we have for others. We should give Uianks to God everyday. The basics have neyer changed. We should thank God that Hle brought Jesus into our lives. The hymn, "God Who Gives Us Life" was sung followed by the Prayer of- Thankfulness and Uic Prayer of Concern. The closing hymn was, "Because Hc Lives". The Benediction was given. Evcryonc was invited downstairs for lunch and a time of fcllowsbip. 1 We arc sorry to report that Bernie Martin is stili a patient i hospitai in London, we ail wish him a healthy and speedy recovery. Mrs. Joy Brown remains a patient in hospital. Church wiil be held at the regular time on Sunday, November 7th. Ail wclcome. Just saw this quote in the Readers Digst...
