However, 1 refuse to remain silent when things are said tha just afi't true. In the November 3, 1993, edition of the Orono Tirnes 1 read in the Kendal Column, "there isn't any religion in school anymore, no Bible ta take an oath on, no singing of God Save the Queen.' Our separale school system teach religion, aur private Christian schaols teach religion, and aur public schoals respect. aur multi- racial socieîy with their différent religions, by not mandating Judea/Chrisîian religion on al children regardless of their- preference, or thal of their parents. Likewise the Bible is used to swear an oath in alI courts, in provincial politics and ini municipal politics as well. Over the period of Remnembrance which we have just observed, I have sung God Save the Queen an three different occasions. Further, 1 have not yet attended any official function as the MPP for Durham East when a toast 10 Her Majesîy Queen Elizabeth 2nd, hasnt been made. We not only have a requirement ta gel back to basics as the calumn writer suggesîed, we also need ta recognize facîs and nat gel carried away in the euphoria of some pasl period clouded by nostalgia. Sincerely, Gordon L. Milîs, C.D., M.P.P. From Around Home (Continued from page 3) teachers and parents. She noted that her grade one studenî's report card noted a reasonably good, mark in reading in the beginning of the second terma and that this was also communicaed by the teacher in conversation. The mother said she was dismayed t have her son fail his first year due to lack of reading abîlity. The mother said she had Iost faith and trust and that, in fact, the svsemn was nol user friendly. She said no one scemed to have an answer for her. Some published commens made by students. spoke of duplication in education especially in the jump for public school to high school. It is a wase of time. One grade Il student said they wer e leaming to write essays in elementary school and then were taken back 10 write sentences in grade nine. Educators told the commission that they need to know their role in to-days educational system. The chairpersons of both the, separate and public boards said they need the province ta tel them what they are responsible for and then give themn the money ta do die job. ,, The above is somewhat surprising as the boards of education pay a good dollar for advice as to a system of education that should be meeting to-day's challenges. It was further said thal greater and greater expectations were being placed on teachers in todays system.
