The unit was purchased by the Hospital Foundation with the assistance of the Memorial Hospital Auxiiary. The Auxiliary donated $75,000 towards the purchase. The unit is located in the hospital's Diagnostic Imaging Department. This highly advanced technology transfers the speed of sound into an image. The colour ini the image allows the internist/radiologist to see the direction of blood travel. 1For example, if a heart valve is leakîng, it can easily be seen on the screen because the blood flow is represented by a colour. Where' the valve is leaking, a different colour wil show up. The equipment also uses the actual sound of the blood to pinpoint problems. The Doppler Unit is used for any work involving blood flow, such as the heart, the carotid arteries, and blood vessels. It can also be used in abdominal work. For expectant mothers, the unit can indicate the blood flow through the cord to see that the baby is receiving proper blood supply. New course teaches seniors computers The Centre for Individual Studies at the Port Hope High Sehool is planning to provide a basic computer course for seniors.
