Lottery fee increa se of 50 percent, Claringtons General Purpose committee is passing along their recommendation for an increase in Lottery fees where appli- cations are made to the Mun- icipality. The increases, with the exception of increasing bingo licence fees, are to become effective as of June 1, 1994. It was noted in a report to committee that a number of changes have been made in the lottery act by theprovince. A key change allows greater authority ta local municipalities ta issue lottery licences. Municipalities may now issue licences for bingos with a prize value of $5,000 which figure formerly was $3500. They can now issue licences for raffles with, a prize value of $50,000. The cammittee on Monday recognized a request by Nyhl Sheehan of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion. Clarington She asked that the tee for bingos flot be raised from the present $14.00 per night. There are but three organizations that hold regular bingos in Clarington being St. Joseph's Parish Hall, the Royal Canadian Legion and Brownsdale Community Centre. In 1993 their licences fées in total was $ 1250.00. The largest revenue from loutery fees corne through the sale of Nevada tickets where the licensing fee in 1993 totaled $12,935. At the present time the municipality is paid $ 12.00 for every box of 2184 Nevada tickets. This is being increased to $24-00 a box. 0f the 120 lottery licences in 1993 the municipality realized a total revenue of $ 16,360. With the increcase to 3 percent rather than 2 percent it is expected the revenue for lottery licences will increase to $29,360 ini 1994. Wetlandsare more than just Wetlands by Barry Snider, Environmental Biologist Ministry of Natural resources staff from Lindsay office have been busy this past summer evaluating wetlands in the area of the Oak Ridges Moraine. Wetland is a general term referring ta a variety of marshes, shrub and tree covered swamps, calcereous rich fens and acidic bogs. These are basic wetland types found in Southern Ontario but there are a wide variety of colourful terms that are also used to depict wetlands; for example there are sloughs, beaver ponds, mires, moose pastures and muskeg. Unfortunately mostéof the original wetlands in Southern Ontario have been lost, the result of agriculture drainage and drainage and filling for development purposes. Shoreline marshes have been eliminated to create beaches and boat slips or simply a desire on the part of the waterfront owners to cleanup the shorelines. Because of the losses stîll occurring it is important to evaluate the remaining wetlands to allow for knowledgeable land use decisions. The evaluation system that the Ministry of Natural Resources uses is an ecological approach that involves the recording of a very wide variety of wetland attributes. The vast range of items makes the evaluation systemn very challenging. This year 10 wetlands were assessed by Don Bush and Bruce Parks bath qualified wetland evaluators, assisted by John Knight. Don and Bruce have considerable experience working in forest ecology and forest Miracle Mart workers back The some 6000 employees of Miracle Mart are to return to work havmng given their stanip of approval to a new three year contract. The workers have been on strike for 13 weeks. Workers, both part-time and fuil-time are taking a $1 .75 an hour pay cut. The company is also offering a buy-out for some 700 employees that are expected to become redundant to the operation and through the possible closing of some stores. Fuli-time employees are being offered $1 500.00 a year up to a maximum of $35,000 for a buy out. Part-timers are being offered $500.00 a year up ta 10 years. Jobs are being guaranteed up to three years with the exception of possible store closings or if sales drop more than five percent of the pre-strike level. The stores are expected to be open this Friday. management. John Knoght works during the school year at Sir Sandford Fleming College where he teaches a number of resource courses such as soil and botany. The evaluation looks at four main areas: biological, hydrological, social and special features. There are many characteristics ini each of these sections with the potential to add up to a maximum of 250 points in each of the four sections. Evaluated wetlands are given a classification from 1 to 7 depending on-the score for the four comrponents. Class 1, 2 and 3 wetlands are considered provincially signif- icant of which the ministry states are to be proteced. The responsibility for protection is borne by the municipality in which the wetland is located. The protection is undertaken through the official plan and zoning. It is hoped that the evaluation of these wetlands will go a long way to stopping the loss of wetlands on the Oak Ridges Moraine area.1 TrayeZ Talle with Elizabeth Belanger-L ink le tter C TC 1A cruise is a high value vacation buyl That is a statement which is neyer going to change.
