Parents see corrective measures needed in educational system long betore Grade 12 Clarke Higli Scliool recently formiulated ani English Writing' Committee following the public announcements on the Province- wide Writing Tests for Grade 12 students which also included students at Clarke Higi Scliool. The committee is made up of representatives from the students, parents, sciool staff and board staff. This local committee lias lield three meetings reviewing the provincial report, the standing at Clarke and as well recommending remedial measures and changes tliat should be considered in bringing about improvements in English Writing at Clarke. The most recent meeting of the Clarke committee was held at the school on February 9tli. Again,, as in -previous meetings, parents on' the committee said that corrective measures in English Writing had to be taken long before Grade 12 and could well go back into elementary school. It was flot just a Grade 12 probleni. Sig Rinas, head of English at Clarke, said the problem was not just an Englisli problem. He said ail departmnents need to be concerned with English writing. This point was alsosupported by board representatives, teadhers and parents on the Clarke committee. The parents have been saying Ha« ppeninges.. He said the test would bc a comparison test between Clarke, Bowmanville and Courtice Secondary scliools. Hie said there was no purpose for a comparison test outside that of the local board. At the close of the meeting Mr. Parker said he along with his assistant would prepare a report as to the concerns of the parents - changes tliroughout the system for improvements in English. He also said they would start planning for the three scliool test. It was tlie view of the committee that Eniglish liad to be a day on day exercise and could be accommodated along with other subjects being tauglit. Schools in the province taking part in the test have been provided witli their students' standings. The province now expects the boards to interpret the results, review the results, and make recommendations for program improvements. Tlie boards are also to submnit a report to the mninistry outlining tlieir plans of improvemnents. The local committee is te meet again in April. Ganaraska Countryside event planned for August Tlie Great Ganaraska Countryside Adventure, se popular last year and with sucli good reviews, is to happen again. Without hesitation members of the executive, at their recent meeting, voted that the event be ield in a similar format as that of 1993. Tlie 1994 event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, August 27th and 28th, 1994. It is estimated that some 1000 to 1200 toured many of the 65 points of interest last year and that more could possibly be expected this year. Kristen MeRac said that feed- back from tliose involved witli points of interest and items for sale said tlie 1993 event was miost successful and most wantced to be included again in the tour. She also said there was considerable interest being sliown from the Port Hope area as to the pro- motion. A projected budget was presented for 1994 in an amount (Continued page 2) Shrove Tuesday at United Church Mr. Alan Plummer was a busy man Tuesday at the Orono Unite d Churcli flipping pancakes for the Sirove Tuesday dinner event. The staff were kept busy in the kitchen as attendance recorded a ful house with extra tables being arranged to meet the demand.
