Thursday morning at Uic Kirby feeders to be used along the Establish Reuse Centre Osbawa7s Green Cap Reuse Centre was officially opened last week at 585 Wentworth Street East, -Unit 32. The purpose of the centre is to reduce-useful items going to the Iandfill site. 'The Centre accepta goods that are in useable or repairable condition. The centre is being funded by the Environmental Youth Corps for staffmng. Goods like small appliances, houseware, furnilture, garage sale leftovers, office equipment, supplies, tools, etc. are acceptcd to be resold. Large appliances, paints and hazardous wastes are not accepted. Some of Thursday morning was set aside at Kirby Centennial Public School for the launch of their latest project, a scboolyard Ecology Trail. It is a five-year program in which students, staff and volunteers will be involvcd in creating a place on the property for nature as well as a place for buman school activities. Voluinteers were much involved in tbe launch on Thursday building bird bouses and bird feeders. These will be used in thc nature section of Uic playgrounds. The Ecology Trail is cstimnated te bc one kilometer ini lngth and docs establisb a boundary between Uic nature area and Uic playgrounds. It will take an irregular course around the perimeter of Uic property and will have nine fitness acrobie stops. It is also wheelchair accessible. Wben completed de Uictalwill take one to a butterfly gardon, past blue bird boxes with a blind so not to disturb Uic birds, a amal pond and wetland, Martin colony bouse, a Savannab and grass- lands, a woodland ecology, a beritage gardon, and a vegetable gardon. There will be wet and dry composting and a display of various formns of rail fences uscd in Uic past. Mr. Taullie Tbompson, principal said, "You will be a guest in nature". Inside Utrailu is set aside for thehuman race and it will bein this area tbat the achool playgrounds will bç re- establisbed and finally a creative playground. Some fund raising for the project is to be undertaken as thc project proceeds. On Tbursday the construction of the blue bird nest boxes were well on their way as weli as thc Martin colony house. Those involved were Walter Evans, Clarington's director of public works, Royal Lee, Laurie Herring, Derek Anderson and Greg Vey,, ail from the local Kirby area. To gain involvement of both students and parents -a Tecbnology Fair is being held on April 15th and 16th. Students at Uic achool have voluntecred te take part in Uic fair through working with othera as a tcam and includîng a parent in cach tcam. Council dropped a $500,000 amount amount whucb was te be collected for a reserve fund for bospital construction. The monies were moved to a general account but again moved out altogether. The total budget was set at $320 million. Ini commenting on the budget Gary Herrema, chairman, said be was1 well satisfied. Some 138 positions at Uic region bave been eliminated over the past two years. Forty-five of those jobs were eliminated from ,the police department. The welfare budget dropped this year by $1.7 million as it is felt that welfare payments arc levelling out. The Social Services department bas 43 job vacancies at the present dîne. The Police department's budget was eut by $2.2 million for 1994.
