Gilbank The deatli of Thelma Emestine Gilbank occurred on Wednesday, February 2, 1994 at Markham- Stouffville Hospital, Markham, following a brief illness. She was 75 years of age. Daughter of the late Harry G. Freeman and Lola May Snowden, she was bomn in Maple Grove and received her education at Maple Grove Public 1 School, Bowmanville Higb School, and Peterborough Teachers College. On July 7, 1945, she marrîed the late Ernest L. Gilbank. Tbey lived ini the Shaw's area and then on a farmn north of Orono. After Ernie's death, Thelma resided in Orono for the past 21,years. Thelma retired in June 1980 after 28 years in the teaching profession, during which time she taught at Devitts, Pickering Beach, Burketon, Browns, Mitcbell's Corners, Hampton, Shaws, and Vincent Massey Schools, serving botb as Principal and teacher. She was an active member of Orono United Cburch for approximately 38 years serving with a dedicated spirit in many capabilities including Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday Scbool, Member of Session, Clerk of Session, Member of U.C.W., President of Orono U.C.W., Stewards Committee, Manse Committee, and Choir Member. Thelma was recently honoured for her volunteer work by the Mayor of Clarington. She was active with Clarington Community Care, Blood Donor Clinics, Cancer Society, Heart Fund, Foot Clinic, Women's institute - Shaw's, Retired -Women Teachers Federation and :__,ono Fair. Her life demonstrated -fer untiring contributions to people and organizations and her zest for living life to the fullest. She was a loving mother and grandmother to Anne Nagarajan and Delphinie, Mark, and Roseanne of Connellsville Pa., Carol and Paul Webb and Dawn, Darren, Derek, and Drewof Markham, Donna and Alan McAlphine and Melissa, Travis, and Brock of Frankford, Bull and Mary Gilbank and Brian, Jonathan, Tinothy, and Sarah of Pontypool, and Dave and Eydie Gilbank and Ashley, Amanda, and Andrew of Pontypool. Also survived by her two sisters Mis. Morley Flintoff (Lycra) of Bowmanville and Mrs. Ross Alin (Marion) of Newcastle. She enjoyed her family and was very proud of ail her grandchildren. After her retirement, Thelma enjoyed travelling ail over the world. Her life was busy and ful - lending a helping band to ber family, friends, or a worthy cause as the need arose. Many friends paid their respects at Morris' Funeral Home while the funeral service was beld at Orono United Church on Saturday, February 5th. The beautiful service was co nducted by Rev. M. Russell. Music was supplied hy organist Stella Morton and soloists Deiphine Magarajan and Ross Metcalf, with readings done by Mark Nagarajan and Grant Yeo. It was obvious by, the overwhelming attendance at the funeral service that Thelma was held in high regard by alil who knew her. Palîbearers were nepbews Bob Gilbank, Winston Clarke, Roland Gilbank, Ross Prout, Wayne Pickard, Grant Flintoff, and Gordon Aluin. Donations were accepted by- Orono United Church, Clarington Community Care and the Cancer Society in her memory and many beautiful floral tributes were received. The two groups addressed council on Monday stating that they were pleased with the report that some action was being taken. The Town wilI also include benches at all soccer pitches and ail fields will be conditioned and graded to an agreed level. Al fields will bc supplied with chalk and lining equipment along with proper facilities to bouse the equipment. 1The report docs suggest that soccer bc extended to include use of pitches on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 'wbich would alleviate any present need for more pitches.
