In fact, Ontario 's new smoking Iaw will be the toughest in ail of North America. The biggest changes to be made are, you must now be nineteen years of age to purchase cigarettes and; cigarettes will no longer be sold in vending machines and drug stores. Yeah, and..? Presently, one must be eighteen years of age to legally buy cigarettes in Ontario. I just saw a fourteen year old kid walk down the street sucking on a cigarette. Where -are these kids getting the smokes?' Most of themn are probably not buying cigarettes when they purchase their mouthwash, deodorant, aspirin and band-aids from the local drugstore. Most of them probably, get them at the local convenience store where a disinterested clerk wiIl, if they remember, with disinterest ask, "Are you old enough to smoke." "Yeah, I just look young for my age." Hey, so do 1. But go to a bar and if someone -oes not look quite of age, you can bc sure they are going to get asked for I.D. I'm twenty-two and still get asked for I.D. at most bars or clubs. Now that the drinking age and the smoking age are the same, Frm willing to bet I wouldn't have nearly as hard a time buying cigarettes. Why is this? What exactly is the différence Chris Libbenga, Christian Living Award; John Line, Male Athlete; James Mercier, Arts Awards; Bradley DeSousa, General Proficiency Awards; Sherri Blacklaw, Academic Proficiency Award; Shannon Robertson, Community Builders Awards; (front 1-r) Adrian Ciestor, Personal Achievement Award; between buying cigarettes and buying alcohol? Both have been medically proven to have serious effects on the body after prolonged use. Is it that the sale of alcohol is subjected to more governîng bodies. Is it because the LCBO oversees the sale of alcohol? Is it because the LLBO has the ability to shut dowii any establishment found serving alcohol to minors? Is the fact that the police are able to handout a hefty fine to any minor found with alcohol, or to any person found to bc providing alcohol to a minor, any sort of deterrent? And do any of these rules apply to the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products? If so, have you ever seen them enforeed? Nope, me neither. And maybe that is where the real problem lies.
