A man is get- ting ready to barbecue supper. His moulli is watering, as he can taste that steak already. 11e turnis on the gas (with the lid stîli closed) and hunts for a match. Once it's lit, lie moves the BBQ over a few feet. This man has just tncreased lis chances of being burned by exploding gas. Anyone who has cooked a sizzling steak over a backyard BBQ knows that propane can be an efficient fuel for cooking. But careless use and storage of propane or propane-burning ap- pliances can be a hazard. What should our barbecuer have done differently? 1) Lifted the lid before he lit the barbecue. You can suffer facial injuries from the lid biowing upwards due 10 gas trapped under- neath. 2) Had the match or lighter already burning (with the lid open) before turning on the propane. Light the BBQ the moment the gas fiow is on, otherwise vou SHEET METAL DESIGNS S Custom Made Sheet Metal Work Galvanized, Stainless Steel or Black Iron f Tig and Arc Welding e Barclay Crozier Steptien Crozier 983-9311 983-6301 'IF YOU CAN DRAWIT, WE CAN MAKE iT B.M. CONSULTING risk being burned by ex- ploding gas. 3) Left the BBQ in ils place - neyer move it once you've lit the propane! "While propane barbecues are cleaner and faster than char- coal barbecues, they do require some maintenance and a few basic precautions," says Dick Phillip, a loss prevention expert with The Co-operators. 1Used with care, propane is a safe and convenient fuel. While propane is flot toxic, il can cause suffocation ina confined space. Propane has a very distinctive odour that is associated with boiled cabbage or rotten eggs. This odour is added for your protection so, that the smallest leak can be detected. Propane Safety While propane equipment is very safe, sometimes explo- sions or other accidents -occur due 10 carelessness or neglect. Propane tanks should neyer be filled to capaeity (e.g. 18- 19 lbs for a 22 lb tank) 10 allow room for expansion. "We've had a number of cases where tanks were over- filled, left in the sun (which expands the gas inside the tank); the fuel expanded and the tanks caught on fire once they were lit," says Phillip. In case of tire, tell people to leave the immediate area and have someone caîl the fire department. Set your garden hose to spray water on the cylinder,,only if it can be done safely. Do flot extin- guish the flame unless you can shut off the cylinder. "Use only CGA, CSA or ULC approved BBQs and propane, appliances. "Neyer BBQ on the baleonies of apartments, condos or in- doors- even in poorly venti- lated outdoor locations, you risk carbon monoxide poi- soning. " StoreBBQs outdoors. Leaks from the tank pose a potential fire hazard. Store upright away from open flame or ex- cessive heat.
