Serving was quite brisk fromi Choice products to a host of The cbarity was ini aid of the il a.m. until 3 p.m. Rebuf remarks as to Orono îce time Letter to the Editor The petition and letter sent ta council by Mrs. Hatfield of the BMHA regarding ice time at the local arenas contained numerous erroneous acis and we would like ta set the record straight. 1. Osbawa does not have regular ice at the Orono arena every Saturday morning and aftemnoon. One Oshawa teain bas one hour of ice on Saturday momning. This saine team bas bad the saine hour since the arena was built. 2. Not once bas the Orono arena ice been double booked and the BMHA bas neyer lost one minute of ibeir ice time. 3. Wbo uses ice ai Uic Orono arena is a matter of public record and eeriainly not a secret. 4. The "Town" of Clarington laxpayers do not pay one cent ta maîntain the ice and operate the Orono arena. 5. The Orono arena was not built with your tax dollars. The iben Town of Newcastle supplîed the interim financing only. The arena was built tbrough donations by local residenis and businesses as well as Wintario grants. 6. Tax dollars are not used for the upkeep of the Orono arena. As of 1990, the Municipaliiy has been responsible for the structural inîegrity of aIl municipal owned buildings. This includes the foundation, roofing, fire and building codes retrofits etc. This, încîdenially, was not requested by us but was forced on us by the province. The Orono arena is one of a very few in Ontario which docs flot operate in the red and does noi require infusions of taxpayers money. The arena operates on money received from the rentaI of the ice and the ,'ommunity centre. Maintenance of the arcna would flot be possible without the Orono Arena Improvements Commitec. Ibis dedicated group of volunteers raîses money from catering banquets as weII as hosting the Annual Beef Barbecque ai the Orono Park every suinmer and serving meals ai the Orono Fair. i should be noted that many of the volunteers have been on ibis committce since the arena was built in 1978 and since they no longer have children of their own playing hockey, their only motivation is community pride. Here is partial list-of wbat ibis commitice bas done at the Orono arena over the years. 1) Payed for the paving and lighting of the parking lot. 2) Completely outfitted the kitchen in the community centre. 3) Installed the handicap elevator. 4) Installed the handicap ramp. 5) Paid for ahl the paint used to paint the arena walls, dressing rooms, lobby, community centre etc. 6) Install new safety glass in south east corner of arena. 7) Supplied new industrial stove and upright cooler for kitchen. 8) Paid $2000 towards new sound system. (Incidentally, the Orono Figure Skating Club also donated $2000 towards tbis.) 9) Boughi upright cooler for bar area of hall. 10) Boughî new rubber flooring for ahl four dressing rooms. 11) Paid for paved area outside Zamboni room. 12) Bought new burnisher 10 polish the floors. 13) Purcbased new industrial water heater. 14) Paid for new impeller on brine pump. 15) Bought.new toilet seat for al washrooms., 16) Paid for new kickboard and top sill for ice surface., 17) Purcbased new ice edger. Not only do these volunteers work s0 n0 taxpayers money is needed- to operate and maintain the Orono arena, but some of the taxes they themselves pay to Clarington are used to operate and maintain the Darlingion arena and the Bowmanville Complex. During the 1993-94 hockey season, the BMHA had 32-1/2 bours of ice lime at Darlington, Bowmanville and Orono arenas. Wiîh only,12 teams, ibis works out to 2 hours and 42 minutes of home ice per tcam per week. By comparison, the Orono OMHA îcams reccivrd onlv 2 bours ai the Orono arena. The house lcague tcams arc even worse off since tbcy bad just 1 and 1/2 hours pcr weck. For the upcoming season, the BMHA is requesting 43 and 1/2 hours of ice time for just 14 teams. Tbis works out to more than three hours of home ice per week for each team. BMHA mamns do not require twice as much ice time per team as the bouse league teams. It should also be noted that the BMHA bas the use of the Bowmanville and Darlington arenas for one wbole weekend each year te host a Midget toumnament. It also bas the use of both arenas for one entire week for it's Chrisitmas Classie, as well as one entire Saturday for Young Canada Day. 'Me BMHA received 3 and 1/2 hours of ice time at the Orono arena last season. On 8 occasions Alex Shepherd, MP E Lets face it, Canada l govemned. Take Durham Region example. In the U.S. the number of congressmen is fixed at 435. Adding the 100 senators t0 that, there is one federal representative for approximately 467,000 people. In Canada it works out to approxirnately one MP for every 73,000 people. When you look at the population of each country it's not hard 10 see Canadians, as a whole, with fewer people gel much more govemment than the U.S. simply Canadian taxpayers cannot afford more MPs.. Canadians, of the right now, are one of the most La the over-represented democracies an Affairs the planet. What we should be week in doing is using our energies to looking make parliament work more )cedure effectively for you with thie MPs federal already there, instead of adding more MIPs working ineffectively. earing It is bard now for MPs 10 efor no participate in committee work, scared question period and various other lacing a duties because of the sheer a those numbers of MPs in the House. ma. There is no doubt in my mind the ce the number of MiPs in Ottawa should be capped at 295. At some point they should be allowed to inerease but it is clear for now that based on future population p 10 use growth there is no need t0 ulted in increase at this poinL 2hour People do not want more a waste politicians, tbey do want better ter ime government.
