For over 500 years, Europeans have been crossing this vast body of water, bringing witb themn their dreams and hopes to-this magnificent land. Babcia and ber children (my father among them) were just a few of the millions of displaced persons lookingfor a home after the war in Europe. For a place to raise their famnilies and eventually see their grandchil dren born in frecdom. They didn't bring much. Only their memories and their backs stiff and strong with ambition. Hope. They bured most of their memories. Who wants to remember war? But, they quickly put their backs to work i tomato fields, tobacco fields, apple orchards and finally in North America's booming automobile industry. Their backs grew strong with a nation wbose industry rose from' the ashes of war. Immigrants need homes. Homes need beds, tables, refrigerators, televisions. A car i the driveway. Neigbbourhoods needed scbools. There is a continent-wide bahy boom. I arn a member of this generation of hope. 1Babcia mis sed the famnily gathering last week. She died nearly two years ago after living a life which stretched beyond tbe reality of the universe, struggling for ber family. Aunt Angela reminded us -- the woman -from, whose body and back came the labour of motberi ng was absent. But, ber memnory lives in ber children, ber grandchildren and i ber great grandcbildren -- Jessie's generation. The generation of my sons. Kyle and Garrett know of the comfort and love a family can enjoy only in freedom. Freedom fromn war. Freedom from slavery. Freedom from natural catastrophe. Born into freedom like me having only glimpses of news headlines of what it means to not be tree. In June, we watched old soldiers remember D-Day.
