Aroun--id the Bjoard with Bob Willsher, Trustee, Ward III Northumberland-Clarington Board of Education It is difficult to believe that students are back te the classroomn already. 1 hope you had a good summer. The year promises to hold many challenges for students, teachers and parents and for trustees the year will bring a host of changes te consider. I am looking forward to continued involvemextt on your behaif. I would like te remnind you of some important things as your student starts (or continue) their education: 1. Get involved with your child's school! The best education occurs only when parents become active pariners. Know your child's teacher and school principal. Don't be afraid to ask questions about what your child is being taught. Understanding the curriculum is important if you are going to provide help for your child at home. 2. Help with your ciid's education by monitoring their performance and talking witb the teacher when things do flot seem right. Teli the teacher about your cbild. Is there something in your faxily situation that miglit impact your childs learning in the classroom. Ofien a serious illness in the family can make a difference in your child's ability to focus in the classroom. Remember, chldren are people too! 3. Trustees are your represenatives . .. we are here te help! If you encounter a problem your first communcation slhould be with the teacher. So many *situations can be resolved if you P discuss them with the teacher. If ~yyou need additional help talk to Ythe school principal. The -;principal is the manager of the school and is most anxious t sece that problems are quickly reoslved. If you stili need help you can contact the school rsuperintendent by calling 1-800- '263-7890. If your concern bas been addressed by these people then feel free to contact your trustee. The Municipality of Clarington bas installed a sidewalk from tbe Orono Estates to provide a safe passage for students. The sidewalk will be kept cdean in the winter by the Clarington Works department. I appreciate the prompt response the town bas made to the concemns of parents in that area. Recenlty I have received some calls from parents asking for a bus for children in the Orono Estates. The Board bas spent a considerable amount of time reviewing the issue of children being able te get safely fromn the estates area to school. The issue has been studied by our transportation department and the police department's safety officer. The installation of the sidewalk was deemed to be the most appropriate and cost effective -means of providing a safe route. This change wilI only be effective if parents education their children. It is important for children te develop responsibiity for their actions. As parents it is our job te teacli them about safety on our streets. Walking te school is a good way for a child te begin the process of developing self confidence and responsibiity for their actions. It might bc a good idea for parents to walk the route to school with their chld. Pointing out areas where tbey are te walk and potential hazards is an effective way of preparing your child for a safe walk to school. Make it a family walk on the weekend if you can't go during the school day! Perhaps several parents from the subdivision could occasionally monitor the students going te and fromt school during the first weeksof school te inake sure the students have developed good safety habits.
