Raptors on the move Raptors, the overail name for all the three hawk-types, of Faicons, Accepters and Butlos as well as Eagles and Vultures, and now well on their way south and will continue to be over die next month and a haif. .In past years the active birder tripped off to Hawk Cliff near Port Stanley to witness the fal trip south. If they heid greater interest they would follow this flight south of Raptons to Holiday Beach near Amherstburg and fmally to the tip of Point Peiee. In 1990 a small group of birders took up a Raptor watch south of Whitby at Cranber-y mnarsh south of HalVs Road. The resuits of nrecording Raptors bas been somewhat astonishing. A record of 10 Golden Eagles on one day alone in 1990. In 1991 on September 20th 5,52 1 Broadwing haWks weretallied along with the other sitings. The list includes 860 Turkey Vultures during a single October day of the sarne year. The report watch started in late August and operates daily weather pernmitting. The Cranberry Mai-ch watch operates on Conservation land where a look-out has been constructed. It can get crowded at times but tiiere is always somen to help the voices in hawk ID's. To reach Cranberry Marsh look-out fmom 401 take the Brock Strcet exit at the south of Whitby. Travel south one block to Victoria Road, travel next a couple of miles to Hals Road and drive south. Hawk watching is not an early to rise event. The hawk movement does not start until the land heats and the warm air begins te fise in what are called thermals. It may be mid-morning before the action begins. The Raptors spiral upward within a thermal reaching the top of the- thermal te glide diagonally downward to reach another thermal and another rise. In this way they are able to travel great distances with littie effort. When a number of hawks are being lifted up by a thermal the group is known as a kettle and couid reach over a hundred at a time i an active period of hawk movement. The Raptors that move along the north shore of Lake Ontario may have come from as fan as north-eastern Quebec. It is al downhill for the birds who may finally cross at the mid-south U.S. at Pelec Point and if not then at Windsor.
